What additional grating should I use for my LHIRES III?

What additional grating should I use for my LHIRES III?

Post by solarchat »

So, I have the resources to buy another grating or two for the LHIRES III. I currently have the 2400.

Am I correct in assuming that a lower resolution grating like a 150, 300 or 600 would allow my students to see MORE of the Sun's spectrum in the same field of view, that is a broader range of wavelengths?

I currently pass around the handheld shelyak tubes to the students to see the entire spectrum and then run them through the LHIRES III for a very close up image.

I would like to be able to show them about half of the visible light spectrum or at least a little more of it then I can with the 2400 grating. They don't really seem to get it right off the bat that this is a closeup of the view through the handheld Shelyak.

Any suggestions or images of what you can see with different gratings?

Stephen,
I find the 300/ 600 l/mm very useful. They give a wide swathe of visible spectrum.
The resolution will obviously vary, and based on a field of around 20mm (for visual)-

As an indication:
Wavelength coverage:
150 l/mm - 7400A
300 l/mm - 3680A
600 l/mm - 1810A
1200 l/mm - 850A

IMHO I'd go for the 600 l/mm - will show the absorption lines easily and give a wide coverage.

Great, I will take your advice and get the 600. Is this something that I should order from you or go with the Shekyak unit?

Stephen,
The grating assemblies are unique to each instrument.
The Spectra-L200 assemblies don't fit the Sheylak LhiresIII and vice versa....
You need to order from Shelyak.
