Sonification of magnetosphere
Using my magnetometer data I've created a sound track to give the impression of the 'solar wind' as it fluctuates during a geomagnetic storm, producing varying pressure on Earth's magnetosphere, changing the strength and direction of the magnetic field at ground level. These changes are detected, logged and converted into eastward (right) and westward (left) modulated synthetic wind sounds and are presented here in MP3 format.
This is best listened to with headphones.
These particular data were collected during the recent CME impact on Feb 20th
Thanks for listening.
Stu.

That's really interesting.
When I see the sun in Ha and the tremendous turmoil that's going on, I always think what an overwhelming sound it would be making if we could hear it. Your solar wind sound track is a great step towards hearing what the sun sounds like.

Good stuff Stu! I have several aurora animations from last week, i'll work out what time they were all taken for you

Re: Sonification of magnetosphere
Thanks everyone. Glad you like the sounds. This new site and Stephen's broadening out of the types of files that can be uploaded certainly makes this easier. Thanks Stephen.
BTW, I had some sounds of a previous CME encounter played on BBC Radio 4's 'PM' programme the week before last. A little solar 'outreach'.
Mark, it will certainly be interesting to try to match up your time-laps sequences with my magnetometer data. Hopefully this will work out.
Cheers
Stu.

Re: Sonification of magnetosphere
Well done Stu reminds me of the sound tracks used when watching some of those shows on Antarctica

Re: Sonification of magnetosphere
That is pretty incredible Carbo60. I appreciate the kind words and I did have this forum specifically in mind when I added the different media types available for upload.
I don't know if you upload these to any other websites or not, but if you do you can actually embed the link to and type of sound file from another website and it will actually embed the player into the post...
when it is attached to the post it shows as a link, which works great too.
