J-J's latest SHG results - absolutely fantastic!!

Post by Merlin66 »

With results like this, it want's me to dump all the etalon's and Quarks we have and get on board for the next generation of solar imaging - with a SHG!!!

Hello everyone,

Here are some spectroheliograms taken today in Paris.

Slightly milky sky, pretty strong turbulence.

Projections highlighted H alpha, H beta and CAK II.

Here is a flash spectrum of helium emission taken at the foot of a beautiful protu on the East limb of the sun.

Have a nice evening

Very narrow band and lot of details!

I'd like to see some pictures of the equipment too~

Hi Ken

thank you very much for posting these fantastic pics from jean jacques. I still prefere to see the sun on the screen live ;) so I won't throw away my solar stuff. May be a scope or two or three, but not the whole bunch

Only stardust in the wind, some fine and some less fine scopes, filters and adapters as well. Switzerland 47 N, 9 E, in the heart of EUROPE :)

Yes, they are pretty darn good, the more I see of all this spectro stuff the more it piques my interest...

While I think this is some of the best amateur work with a SHG, It truly pales in comparison to what you can get by standard imaging techniques. With that said, I do appreciate the viewing of the sun in other non standard wavelengths. The Hbeta is fascinating!

I'm busy translating J-J's write-up on the SHG he uses....upload soon.
IMHO give the SHG a few more years to mature and it will be the "weapon of choice" for serious solar imagers....

I've translated J-J's French write-up on his SHG.
(The images have French annotations, but I'm sure are understandable based on his text)

Translation:

Here are 3 annotated photos from my SHG set-up.
http://img5.hostingpics.net/pics/965210 ... annote.jpg
http://img5.hostingpics.net/pics/473514 ... annote.jpg
http://img5.hostingpics.net/pics/480264 ... annote.jpg

Sorry, the comments on the photos are in French ( But should be clear from the following text)
The primary mirror of my old newtonian telescope, Ø 210 mm F = 1200mm was used for the optics for the spectrograph part of the SHG.
The spectrograph is of the Ebert-Fastie type. (http://www.thespectroscopynet.eu/?Spect ... figuration) The fork equatorial mounting and drive ( using a smooth sector and endless screw) was also recycled for the SHG use. The grating employed is a 58x58 mm with 1200 l/mm. It is placed in a box provided with a retractable window. This excludes dust apart from the periods of use. A stepper motor driving an endless screw allows the rotation of the grating. - The box constituting the body of the spectrograph was built by using 30mm x 30mm section XFBM. (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/tubing-struts/2899054/). It is very practical for assembly, clean and easy to modify. Adding accessories is also made easy. The grooves of these sections provide the benefit of using removable walls to close off the spectrograph compartment. These very lightweight walls consist of plates of 6mm Depron (Depron foam is a closed cell polystyrene sheet) covered with black velvet.
The “telescope” part which forms the image of the solar disc on the entry slit of the spectrograph is a Newtonian matched to be compatible with the spectrograph part previously described. Primary mirror Ø 98mm F = 1440 mm (I made and polished the 2 optical parts of this small telescope) provides an image of the sun. An important feature is the secondary plane mirror at 45° mounted on a BK7 window. A second tilted plane mirror at 45° directs the final image onto the entrance slit. - the tube of this small telescope is made from PVC Ø 120 mm and it is aligned with the optical axis parallel to of the large mirror of the spectrograph. The main mirror is axial adjustable to allow precise focusing on the slit.
I preferred to make the SHG with mirrors to be been free from the problems of chromatic aberrations and variations related to the wavelength.

I think the all reflector design is the most ideal. As has been mentioned, trying to control aberrations in refractors optics, particularly near 400nm, in short focal length telescopes is difficult with commercial lenses. But a Newtonian, even at f5, should give a very good image (at least near the centre of the FOV).
