Hello Everyone.
Here are 2 SHG images taken in the CaII K absorption line.
(The reason I'm writing CaII is not to confuse with upcoming images in the CaI (neutral) line.)
CaII K3:
CaII K1v:
A little less contrast in the K1v line, but still some evidence of the huge filament near the E limb. Sunspots are a little less visible in K3 since we are looking high in the chromosphere.
SHG observation of CaK is tremendously interesting! Watching plage and other features as they appear, real time, in the spectrum video is fascinating.
For me, the imaging results are also far more gratifying than H alpha, at least at the dispersion and bandpass I'm currently using. (I think I might be guilty of over-processing my H alpha images!)
For my imaging program, I'll settle on alternating between two configurations of the SHG. I'm going to replace my 2400 /mm grating with a 3600 /mm for better dispersion in the CaK region. The drawback: the 3600 /mm grating has a long wavelength limit of about 5300A. This will be my short wavelength device. For longer wavelengths, I will go back to my tandem grating design (79 /mm echelle and 1800 /mm grating) which gives me super high dispersion and works better at longer wavelengths. It's pretty straightforward to change configurations between imaging sessions.

Elements #1 and #2 are easily changed to configure as I'd like.
For medium dispersion in the green to violet, #1 is a 40mm sq mirror with element #2 the 3600 /mm, UV blazed grating.
For high dispersion, I've used a 79 /mm echelle as element #1 and 1800 /mm grating as #2. This gave me a silly (reciprocal) dispersion of about 0.007A per px and a bandpass of about 0.07A ! I didn't proceed with this config for imaging because I had vicious vignetting at the time (bad exit pupil problem - now cured!). I think a more reasonable configuration (for ease in tuning) might be grating as element #1 and echelle as element #2. I have yet to try it.
