13Jun2014 PZ SHG: Ca H Proms

Post by p_zetner »

Hello Everyone.

I managed to capture some prominences during the 13June imaging session. Here is a composite image of the H3 image with corresponding proms (separate prom image taken at higher gain).
CaH3_prom_102858_187-761_proc.jpg
Producing prominence images at different wavelengths allows analysis of the recession and approach velocities of the plasma.
Here are some "triptych" images in which the centre image corresponds to Ca H line centre and the upper and lower portions of the image show receding and approaching parts of the proms (respectively) at the indicated velocities.

Cheers.
Peter.

Mark, et al,
This is one of the benefits of having a SHG...
You can quickly record the spectral AVI then select which wavelength you want to process...all the data is already there....

Thanks Walter, Mark, Derek and Alexandra.

Glad you enjoyed the study. Ideally, I should animate these results, doing a "spectral sweep" of the proms. I'll work on that!

Cheers.
Peter.

Yes, was playing around with a Shelyak last weekend and must say that i'm very interested in the concept. I just need to get my head around it a bit more yet before I take the plunge ;)

Amazing work Peter!
Have you tried to colour each image with a different Doppler shift and then stack them?

Hi Alex.

That was my original plan! My attempt to do this was kind of simple minded. For example, I took the prom images at + 8.46 km/s, centre line (v=0) and - 8.46 km/s and copied them into the R, G and B channels, respectively, of an RGB image. Here's what I got:
proms_spectral_crop_sharp_05-07-09_colour_proc.jpg
I'm not all that happy with the result. It's easier to see velocity differences in the separate monochrome images, as presented above. Is there something else I could be doing to emphasize the colour coding? Even in the simple minded colour image here, I'm not sure how to interpret the colour yellow, for example.

Cheers (and thanks for the suggestion).
Peter.

Hi Peter

very interesting. What happens if you use only red and blue and let the zero velocity White?

Hello Peter!

I'd do exactly what you did. This is interesting so I will check if there's more to be done.

You're ,really, been doing nice and interesting work!

Cheers
Alex

BTW it seems I've missed this post http://solarchat.natca.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6265

Just referring to it as a comparison.

Thanks Everyone.

Alex, thank you very much for the comments and the link. I'm familiar with Jim Ferreira's work (http://www.lafterhall.com/halpha_sun.html). He used a tunable Daystar filter to take images at line centre and in the red and blue wings of H alpha. The only flaw with this technique is the time elapsed (about 10-15 mins) for the heating or cooling of the filter to retune, during which the prominences can change slightly. This may not be significant. It's certainly not an issue with SHG images, where all the spectral data of an image is collected simultaneously.

It turns out that Phil Rousselle has a good discussion on the production of Dopplergrams. It involves taking differences of images, which I have not done. Phil presents the results in animation form, which may be the best way to go. I'll investigate the colour coding idea some more.

Thanks for that link Peter!

I guess the wavelength difference makes sense, becaus eit is also in the redshift formula.
Looking forward to see how you go on :)

I tried using a gif animation to show red and blue shift filaments:
