Co-rotating Interactive Region (CIR)- Magnetometer response

Earth is passing through a 'Co-rotating Interactive Region' in space. This is a region where fast and slow moving solar wind streams pile up, creating plasma density gradients which interact with Earth's magnetosphere and show up on magnetometers around the globe, including my garden magnetometers located here in NW England.

Here are some data from yesterday and today. The induced magnetic perturbations created as the plasma waves roll over our planet are plain to see.

Maybe one day I'll have this linked up to some sort of alert service ;)

Mark, good luck in Iceland. Let me know when you have some time-lapse video and we'll try to coordinate to create a sound track. Ideally the video should last 1-2 minutes and be something like 1hr of real time. If the video is too short, or the real time duration is not long enough, then there is not enough activity to make the sound track sufficiently dynamic, generally. It depends on the level of auroral activity, but this has been my experience.

Will do stu! I now have a mains power mod for my canon that will be going to Iceland with me so no more issues with batteries going flat just as things get interesting. In theory I can timelapse now for as long as I have space on memory card for, which is longer than a single night.
