October Geomag Summary with AR2192 overlay

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi All,

What a month for solar observers! AR2192 certainly put on a spectacular show and there are indeed some fabulous images of it on this site. Well done to all who saw and imaged it. However, despite the many M-class and several X-class solar flares, the geomagnetic effects from this active region were almost non-existent, demonstrating that flares (even big ones) do not necessarily lead to CME's. I've plotted the geomagnetic activity recorded here in Preston UK on my magnetometers for October and overlaid the flare activity from AR2192 using data from SolarHam http://www.solarham.net/solarflares.htm. As you will see, other than a little geomagnetic unrest and minor storm early on, there was very little geomagnetic activity to speak of during the course of its transit. Certainly there were no major CME/geomag events!

So, whilst spectacular to see, from a geomagnetic standpoint AR2192 was a bit of a damp squib

I hope you find this interesting.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Thanks everyone. Glad you appreciate the data.

Computer crash, unfortunately, Alexandra, but thankfully easily resolved with a re-boot once I'd noticed it wasn't collecting data for a while.

Cheers

Stu.

Great overview Stu, I have some aurora shots from the 27th (when I finally get round to getting them off the memory card).

Excellent, Mark.

When you're ready, let me know the start/end times and I'll pull out the relevant data and see if we have a match.

Cheers

Stu.
