Hi All,
On September 12th we were struck by two minor CME's. One was in the early hrs (around 1:30 UT) and the second much later in the day at around 21:00 UT. These originated from a couple of flares (M4 and X1.6) released from AR2158 on September 9th.
Both of these CME's were geo-effective and detected on my magnetometers here in the North West of England. The recorded variations in local magnetic field have been converted into sound using music production software to create a solar wind effect.
Hope you enjoy the 'sounds of the solar wind'
Cheers
Stu

Re: Sounds of the 'solar wind' - September 12th CME double h
Hi John,
It's all synthetic, of course, but the sounds (pitch/intensity) are driven by real data. The gale sounds are in a way related to the speed, density and magnetic polarity of the solar wind/CMEs as the solar protons and electrons interact with Earth's magnetic field causing a measurable change in field strength and direction here at ground level. With solar wind speeds in excess of 300km/s, peaking at around 500km/s, I thought gale sounds might be appropriate .
Cheers
Stu.

As a scientist and an amateur musician, that really hits the spot
Fantastic bit of data manipulation Stu
