Hi All,
A southward oriented interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), carried by a fast flowing solar wind, opened the door in our protective magnetic bubble last night, allowing energetic particles to enter our atmosphere and produce beautiful aurora. The events also created geomagnetic disturbances which were recorded on my magnetometers located here in the NW of England.
My geomag data are shown below, together with ACE data showing Bz (red line) which is the direction of the IMF. It can be seen that Bz moves from +ve values to -ve values, eventually becoming +ve again after a bit of bouncing around. The geomag data responded to the disturbance, albeit with a slight time delay (approximately 1hr) given that ACE is 1.5 million km from Earth in the direction of the Sun and the solar wind was travelling at about 400km/s at that time (taking about an hour to reach Earth from ACE).
I hope this is of some interest.
Cheers
Stu.

Hi Mark, Mike, Alexandra and Walter.
Glad you enjoyed the data. Many thanks for your comments.
Mike, I'll be happy to assist, as and when. Don't forget you'll also need a small ultrasonic emitter.
Cheers

Re: Geomagnetic Activity Jan 3rd 2015
Hi Mike,
Perfect, although it was possible just to purchase a transmitter separately at one time. Anyhow, they are inexpensive enough even in pairs not to break the bank.
I was thinking about setting up a separate thread 'Magnetometer Project' so that we can record our progress towards having you build, install and operate a magnetometer of your own. This will help anyone else follow the procedure in practical terms and help us iron out any wrinkles in the tutorial etc. Would you be okay with this?
Stu.

Sounds great to me.
Just got an email saying my sensor from Speake is in the post and will pop to Maplin for the transducer in the next couple of days.
