CME from AR2297 Arrives- Magnetometer Response

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi All,

On March 15th AR2297 erupted and a coronal mass ejection (CME) was flung into space. This morning at 04:46 it arrived at Earth as a strong sharp spike in my magnetometer data. The event was too fast to be recorded with any degree of accuracy at 2.5 minute cadence (the usual rate at which I take readings), but fortunately not too fast to be captured using my hi-resolution recorder operating each second.

The chart below illustrates the speed of this transition and using LASCO C3 image data I've estimated the CME's speed to be around 1.9 million miles per hour (850Km/s). This is a long way short of the fastest CMEs ever recorded (up to 3,500 km/s), but the magnetic impact response is one of the fastest I've seen.

This might just be the first wave and more of this CME may yet follow......we'll see.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Fantastic capture Stuart - just what we were waiting for :bow :beanie: :bow

I had been hoping for some fun after seeing the propagation event but hadn't expected it to be so fast moving :o
As you suggested, my 2.5 minute cadence didn't capture the spike as cleanly as your 1s one (guess what I will be setting up after the event)
However.................. there are more bursts following on:

Best wishes,

Gets better and better:
Magnetic Storm 1800 17th March 2015.jpg

This is a 1 second cadence I started after seeing Stuart's post - look forward to seeing what the Master picked up with his 'original' :bow

Thanks for getting me hooked on this project Stuart - loads of fun even without the sun being visible :bow2

Glad you're enjoying it Mike.

Alexandra, thanks for the link. Certainly a useful website.
Mark....if only our terrestrial weather would play ball!

Derek, aurora a plenty if you've got clear skies and you're suitably located, north or south.

Cheers

Stu.

Well, at least it is clear at the moment - just doing some 'sissy' astronomy as Stephen would say....... trying out the Tal100 on a NGC 2903, a nice barred spiral galaxy in Leo. Might have look for aurora a bit later...................

I kept looking all last night from when it went dark till I went to bed, however there is just too much light pollution to see any of the auroral storm, despite it being the strongest of the solar cycle... I considered getting the camera and trying some long exposures, but experience tells me there was no point, would have just got light polluted skies... Lots of nice pictures on the social media sights, but nothing from the towns and cities as far south as the midlands...

I took some images around 10pm but I couldn't see anything on them. I kept looking out the window until midnight and gave up and went to bed. Never mind, at least all your recorders went crazy :)

I couldn't see anything either. It appears that the maximum peaked at around 11:25pm, but too much light pollution and a wisp of high cloud made it impossible to observe from my location.

Here is the full record for the day. This is by far the largest storm this solar cycle, peaking on my magnetometer at around 240nT.

Thanks Wah and Walter.

I've now added a sound track using my sonification method to try to give some sense of the passing of very fast moving solar plasma during the storm. Hopefully the link will work.

Best with headphones.

The sound isn't working on the PC, I'll have to wait till the hubby gets home ;)

Here is my shot from last night, I saw others on the web which were highly stretched so I stretched mine to pretend there was an aurora. I guess the pixels were there

At least you managed to get SOMETHING, Alexandra.

No such luck here   On the edge of town, but still way too much light pollution
