Solar Wind from Coronal Hole Reaches Earth (April 2nd)

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi All,

A large coronal hole is spewing out high speed solar wind. Yesterday it reached Earth and sent magnetometers twitching as it impacted our magnetic bubble and disrupted Earth's magnetic field. The data for the event are shown below and are compared with a relatively 'quiet' day, although no two quiet days are really alike. As can be seen, the solar wind produced a couple of strong spikes in the evening. The 'hump' between 6:00am and mid-day is a typical feature resulting from solar induced electric currents flowing within the ionosphere and generating their own magnetic field.

Pretty darn good I think, Mike, considering the temperature sensitivity of this device and its simplicity.

Cheers

Wow! and thanks for putting in the calm day for reference, it really helps grasp the magnitude :bow :bow :hamster:
