Greetings Everyone.

I'm posting a compilation montage of our favourite star in eight different lights.
Most of the images are from a 22 October observing session except for three which come from 19 October.
(Disks are properly oriented with a 180 degree rotation.)

1) what is that 4878.2 line ?

2) I notice Na D1 line almost white light like -- I read its useful for red flare in sunspot
you ever heard about this?

Thanks for your comments, everyone. I have to admit that it's fun to dial up the instrument to some wavelength of choice and generate an image. The Na D1 and Fe / Ca lines were "accidental" .... I didn't set the spectrometer in the right spectral region! In the case of the Na shot, I meant to record HeD3 but set the spectrometer to the red side of the Na doublet instead of the blue ... careless. I was using a different camera lens and the orientation of the camera was upside down compared to my usual setup. In the Fe / Ca case I meant to record H beta and used an Omega H beta filter to quickly find the line (I was in a bit of a hurry to get to work on time!). Unfortunately, the strongest line, centred in the Omega filter bandpass, was the Fe / Ca. The H beta line is off in the blue wing of the filter bandpass. This filter would actually have to be tilt-tuned slightly to capture H beta ... beware!

Productive accidents, though.

There seems to be some kind of structure on the Na D1 image, over and above the expected uniform photospheric surface. I wouldn't be able to see granulation at this image scale. I actually generated this image in the near (blue) wing of the NaD1 line and I'm thinking there is a contribution from the Doppler effect in producing the surface "mottling" in this image. Convection in supergranules maybe?

The Fe / Ca line showed a surprising degree of feature contrast. Foukal ("Solar Astrophysics") mentions an enhancement of faculae in the CN molecular bandhead which definitely seems to be true (1st image in the "octad"). He also singles out the Mg lines for increased contrast. I did check out Mg in this observing session but the contrast in the Fe / Ca image was far superior.

highfnum: The Fe / Ca line is a spectral blend of a line belonging to Ca and a line belonging to Fe. They sit almost on top of each other, producing strong absorption. Attached below is a portion of the Liege spectrum, showing this blended line in the region of H beta. (I'm not sure what a red flare is ... haven't heard of it.)

That's why the spectroheliograph is becoming so popular.
I'm a 100% sure we will see more and more excellent results like Peter 's in the near future.

I have to admit that when the skies promise to clear (an increasingly rare event, it seems) it's a hard choice between hauling out the conventional imaging gear or the spectroheliograph.

Ken: You're really embracing the role of spokesperson for amateur spectroheliography. I'll try out my Australian: "Good on ya, mate!" Here's hoping the new book is a big seller.

I was hoping for a Xmas release, but I think Springer are targeting late Jan 2016.
I'll keep everyone posted on any further developments/news.
I'm just putting the finishing touches to the SimSpecSolar spreadsheet - this allows you to design and validate your SHG concept. Covers all designs - Classical, Littrow, E-F, C-T etc.
It will calculate the anticipated FWHM bandwidth, based on your optics, slit gap, camera pixel and the image size as well as wavelength coverage. Pretty neat.
I'm also preparing a detailed write-up of the SHG I'm currently building. Based on a couple of excellent Carton objectives, the telescope is a 100/1300 and the spectrograph a Littrow based on a 90/1000 lens. Fitted with an adjustable slit and 2400 l/mm grating this should give <0.2A bandwidth with the ZWO ASI 174 camera. By using ROI and fast frame rates >600fps this could allow the addition of a nodding mirror scanner to give Hi-res images in less than 4sec.
