someyhing very different with my SHG

Post by highfnum »

I know this is a solar forum
I did not know where to post
and besides who else knows about SHG

I took lunar SHG in sodium light

congrats to Wah! -- program handled image
each exposure was over 1 second thats why resolution not so good
used DMK camera

Merlin66 - has anyone tried this before?

south is left

i notice a few areas glowing brighter in sodium light
any significance?

That is interesting - I guess you could 'geologically map' the moon like this using a range of wavelengths - very interesting indeed!

JP,
I remember saying back in early July that I thought the SHG could, with suitable sized telescopes, be used for bright night time objects - Jupiter was mentioned.
As far as I can determine you are the first to record the Moon using an SHG!!!
This may encourage others to do similar trials......
Well done, a monumental achievement - another step along the long hard road to future SHG successes.
Onwards and Upwards.
(EDIT) the guys on the Astronomical Spectroscopy forum have corrected me! There have been various successful spectrographic scans of planets and nebula over the past few years....

Hmmm
Well they used "conventional" spectrographs, with wider slits and wider bandwidths, not the SHG configuration we'd use for solar.....

thx and ok
on a more narrow definition, I'll take that

the trick was to use fast optics and using dmk camera that
is a ccd not cmos -- more sensitive

I hope other will try like Wah! Zetner DSobserver
since they make very smooth images

Interesting result.

The following link on "lunar petrographic imaging" might be informative for you.
http://www.rkblog.rk.edu.pl/w/p/lunar-p ... ge-colors/
Also, the full text of "Manual for Lunar Spectral Work" (Selenology Today #19) is downloadable at:
http://www.lunar-captures.com/SelenologyToday.html

The lunar minerals all have reflectances which vary with wavelength, so spectral imaging provides information about the Moon's mineral composition. The variation with wavelength is slow, though. There don't seem to be any narrow absorption features. In this respect, the SHG might be pretty serious overkill! Simple bandpass filters will be far more efficient.

On the other hand, who knows. Maybe you'll discover something new and amazing!

A great result and as the light is reflected Sunlight very relevant to what we all do.
