G1 Solar Storm 20th-21st January 2016

Post by Carbon60 » Thu Jan 21, 2016 8:18 pm

Not a huge event by any means, but still enough to twitch magnetometers around the globe, including my own modest one buried in my back garden here in the north-west of England.

Officially this was a G1 storm, which is the lowest NOAA classification for geomagnetic events http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/noaa-scales-explanation. Nevertheless, for those lucky enough to be within range, the event sparked beautiful bright aurora.

I saw some nice pictures of the aurora that resulted taken from Anglesey, so it certainly had an impact. Good capture of it Stu!

Nice record Stuart :seesaw

Pleasantly surprised to see a nice 'kick' on my magnetometer screen yesterday afternoon after a very quiet few days :P

Spectacular :bow :bow :hamster: I got some alerts but it seemed to be fading before late evening when I could have had a look.
