SHG 1st light of 2016: AR12529 in Ca H

Post by p_zetner »

A second view of the Great Spot. This time a spectral series through the CaH spectral line (Blue to red is upper left to lower right and I have yet to calibrate the step size.)

An interesting observation: What I thought was a light bridge in the spot centre becomes much brighter near line centre, indicating more of a chromospheric nature to this feature, suggesting it exists high in the solar atmosphere. I was under the impression that light bridges were photospheric.

Cheers.
Peter.

This is a lovely sweep Peter! When I was using the CaH Quark I also found the plage got dimmer as you tuned either side of the centre line, your images show it very well. This spot seems to have quite a quite a few of the floating tendrils. Here's a shot I took yesterday in CaK that shows it.

Really interesting!

It show that SHG can really make science even on a amateur level!

Thanks, Everyone!

Thanks for the image, Mark. So, I guess we're observing these chromospheric tendrils rather than a photospheric lightbridge.

Cheers.
Peter.

Superb images Peter :bow :bow :hamster: I have definitely seen light bridges in Halpha, CaK and WL
