July '17 Geomagnetic Summary

Hi all,
Here is my summary of geomagnetic activity for July.
- July Summary.jpg (261.14 KiB) Viewed 4823 times
The most significant event was the CME impact and consequent wake turbulence July 16th/17th which sparked a G2 storm and beautiful aurora. Apart from a minor CME event at the start of the month, mostly the space environment was fairly quiet except for occasional gusts of solar wind from a couple of coronal holes.
We'll see what August brings.
Thanks for looking.
Stu.

Still a fair bit of activity for a quiet Sun so hopefully these coronal holes will bring some aurora activity this autumn.

Hi Alexandra, let's hope so. I was hoping for something later this week ahead of my trip to Iceland, but AR2670 appears to be too stable and I don't see any coronal holes on the horizon in time for my short stay. Ah well.....

There are still some NLC around Stu, keep an eye open for them. Looking forward to hearing how you got on, take lots of pics!

please explain in short summary why coronal hole
behaves a bit like flare activity
nice work

Thanks, Mark. I'll certainly keep a look out for NLCs. Some aurorae would be nice though.
John, coronal holes allow the solar wind to flow more freely from the Sun, pushing charged particles at high speed out into space. When Earth is in the wind stream we see the effects as aurorae and geomagnetic unrest.

You are in luck Stu, a coronal hole is just opening up for your Iceland trip

Based on when we were there this time last year you need to be observing from 1am-3am local time for any chance of seeing them, it's light for the rest of the time.

Who needs sleep?
Thanks for the tip, Mark.
