2017 Annual Geomagnetic Data- Updated

Hi all,
I've pulled together all 193,000 data points collected over the year showing that even with a declining solar cycle there are still plenty of opportunities to view the aurora, primarily due to fast flowing solar wind arising from large coronal holes.

We'll see how 2018 pans out.
Thanks for looking.

That looks a busy year but I would say that December looks a lot quieter than last January or February
but then again it was quiet in June July too, so is that a decline in between the equinox activity?

Hi Alexandra,
Some further analysis confirms what you were thinking. A dip between equinoxes. It will be interesting to see if this repeats annually.

I hope you find this interesting.
I've now plotted the data as a running average (5 days) to smooth out the peaks. I've also annotated and added SDO/AIA images to show where the geomagnetic activity originated, which turns out to be mostly coronal holes (CHs) and the ensuing fast flowing solar wind. There are a few CMEs in the mix, but these are relatively few in comparison.

It bodes well for aurora watchers in a declining solar cycle with fewer active regions, assuming that coronal holes persist throughout the cycle.
Thanks for looking.

Excellent data Stu. I was saying at Liverpool Astro Society on friday evening that the significant majority of my Icelandic aurora observations over the years were a result of coronal holes apposed to CMEs. All makes sense really.
