Geomagnetic storm 1st Feb 2019

A geomagnetic storm is underway according to my magnetometer here in the UK. The source is fast flowing solar wind from a large coronal hole. There might be a chance of aurora overnight if you're lucky enough to be in the right place, with clear skies..... that counts me out :(

I'm just glad my magnetometer is up an running reliably again since the hiccup over the holiday break.

Thanks for looking.

I'm actually out in the sticks tonight but so far south I doubt I'll see anything. I will go for a look as it's clear. Saw lots of pictures online from last night of auroras.

Hi Stuart...

Great to see your measurement of the latest storm. I've been following all the great pics posted to SpaceWeather from those north of the arctic circle and their Auroral Oval showed the activity reaching quite far south the other night. I looked out a fee times but no significant activity was visible so I needed to be further north to luck out.

I went out numerous times last night, but down at 52n there was nothing to be see over a land horizon. There might have been a chance on the north wales coast. A good record of the event Stu.

Great read out Stuart, I am glad you caught the event :hamster: again I had no alerts from Lancaster so I investigated. I used to have e-mail alerts which I joined about 10-15 years ago, I reckon they have got rid of that data because of GDPR. All the new alerts on their site seem to be app related on a mobile phone :(

Many thanks, Mark, Brian and Alexandra. There have been some beautiful photographs of the aurora posted online from those fortunate enough to be in the right locations; clearly that’s not us. :(

Alexandra, I think using a mobile ‘phone app is possibly the only way to receive such alerts nowadays.

The alerts I get are through the app, I don't get texts. Texts are going to cost them £££ to send out whereas an app based system is going to be a lot cheaper.
