CME impact 17th March 2013 - Magnetometer response
Wonderful CME event today, which impacted Earth at 06:00 UT. The effects were detected by my magnetometers as the CME slammed into Earth's magnetosphere, which is still reverberating in the wake.
Here are a couple of charts showing the early stages of the event, with the first chart updated every 2.5 minutes and the second showing the main impact in more detail with data recorded once per second. Note the much finer structure recorded in the second set of data which could otherwise be missed. This, presumably, is related to the magnetic 'shape' of the cloud of charged particles in the CME as it disrupted our magnetic field.
Thanks for looking.
More to come.
Cheers
Stu.

This is excellent Stu! Auroras a plenty tonight for those in northerly latitudes...

Re: CME impact 17th March 2013 - Magnetometer response
I've now converted the magnetic fluctuations recorded during this morning's CME impact event into sound using a process of 'sonification' which I've developed using MIDI and Cubase music production software. The result is best listened to using headphones for the full effect, but basically I've converted the E-W and N-S magnetic field fluctuations into an 'interpretation' of the solar wind/CME (as a real wind sound) with N-S being represented as wide stereo and E-W being represented more centrally in the stereo audio space.
The fluctuations are as they were recorded, although time compressed. Real time is 30 minutes, from 05:45 until 06:15.
Admin....how do I post an MP3 file?
Regards
Stu.

people on north facing coasts probably stand a half decent chance of at least photographing them, I think it will have to pep up a bit before us land lubbers with street light flooded streets would see anything, but, worth checking never the less...

Re: CME impact 17th March 2013 - Magnetometer response
Clouds here too Swisswalter......but that's not unusual.
Alexandra, there should be some great auroral displays further North and my magnetometers are still going a bit crazy as the CME passes through and reverberates with our magnetosphere, but as Mark says, it will be tricky to see anything here, given our usual levels of light pollution.
My wife and I went on a 'Northern Lights' flight from Manchester last Tuesday to get as close as possible and above any cloud base. What a great evening we had and we did actually manage to see the aurora, albeit a little faint and diffuse, but luckily some structures developed before we had to leave our holding pattern and it turned out to be a lovely show. I bet it is stunning tonight!! If you don't want to be out in the snow in Norway, I can certainly recommend the flight as an alternative.

Thanks Stu for the recommendation, however if I took a flight I might not see the aurora with all the pills I need to pop first

Hi Alexandra,
I stood around getting cold and the camera went wrong. In fact there was no structure visible just the white glow with a tinge of green. Also the clouds were passing over on and off...
There is a keen observer nearby here who has a facebook page and he did get some shots,

I hope that link works
cheers

Re: CME impact 17th March 2013 - Magnetometer response
Here is the full CME impact event recorded over the past 24hrs (max Kp6 according to Spaceweather.com). All quiet again now at Kp2, so the chances of seeing aurora are now much reduced.

Thanks Walter. The CME provided a nice opportunity to gather some good data. This is the first since my set-up was modified a few weeks ago.
