Solar storm caused by southerly oriented interplanetary magnetic field

I LOVE finding out about different ways to appreciate the Sun and light in general. Use this forum to post your info or questions about various outside the mainstream ways to appreciate our life giving star!

Solar storm caused by southerly oriented interplanetary magnetic field

Post by Carbon60 »

The interplanetary magnetic field turned 'south' this weekend, creating a geo-effective solar storm here on Earth as it ploughed into our magnetosphere. See http://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/help ... -field-imf for more details. The storm was significant and the magnetic disturbance sparked strong aurora around the poles and further south than usual.

This was a moderate storm (now subsiding) at G2 level with a Kp6 planetary index. Below are my magnetometer data showing the effects yesterday. Also shown are some N-S (X) data from Chambon la Foret, located close to Paris, as a reference. The correlation between my N-S data and those from Chambon appears to be quite good.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Hi Stuart

congratulations, you have the finer resolution

Thanks Alexandra and Walter.

After months of ironing out the wrinkles I'm pleased that these are now working so well and giving the professionals a run for their money. I could have bought a commercial product, but it is more fun and more rewarding building from scratch. We now just need some more solar events for more data!!

My Hi-res charts sample at 150 times the data sampling rate shown in these charts!!

Thanks again.

Regards

Stuart
