Rare Magnetic Event
An X3 solar flare created a rare Magnetic Crochet event yesterday at around 21:00UT (I didn't know what this was either before reading it on Spaceweather.com)
More information on:
http://www.ips.gov.au/Educational/3/1/1
It seems to be related to an increase in the electrical currents that flow within Earth's ionosphere. These occur as a result of an increase in the levels of ionisation caused by the X-ray flux from the flare.
This rare event was captured on my hi-res magnetometers starting at around 9:00pm (UT) for about 1hr. :cheer: It appears in the plot as a double peak. A stronger effect would have been recorded had my magnetometers been directly 'under the Sun' but at 9:00pm local time they were well over the illuminated horizon, on the dark side of the terminator. Consequently, the recording is a bit noisy, but the signal is still discernible.
Thanks for looking.
Stu.

Re: Rare Magnetic Event
Thanks Mark. I was pretty pleased that they detected this weak event.
Cheers

Fantastic! when I read it on Spaceweather I wondered whether you had this too :
What is the spike at 8:50?

Not sure, but most likely some local anomoly. Despite living on the edge of my village with fields next to the house (and my magnetometers) there will inevitably be local magnetic interference at times. I can even detect the icecream van turning around in the street, or neighbour's cars coming and going. Opening the garage door causes a significant effect and all of these things are 10's of metres from my equipment, such is the sensitivity.

Re: Rare Magnetic Event
Thanks Stu I wonder if this effects the Aurora?
Hi Derek,
Probably not in this case, as the magnetic event was generated within our ionosphere by electromagnetic radiation from the flare rather than as a result of a CME. So the particle count and solar wind strength would not have been affected.
If the flare released a CME then we might see something in the Aurora in a few days.

Re: Rare Magnetic Event
Hi Stu.
Your results are impressive and fascinating! Do you have a description of your magnetometer anywhere?
Cheers.
Peter.

Re: Rare Magnetic Event
Hi Peter,
Here is a word document which describes the original set-up.
I've since modified a few things. I now have a direct electrical link between the FGM-3 and the bat detector rather than using a transducer (through a couple of resistors). Also, I've added a voltage regulator and capacitor close to each FGM-3 and now the two FGM-3 sensors are buried in the garden, enclosed in plumber's water pipe with sealed ends in a north-south/east-west direction.
Everything else is much the same.

Hope this is helpful.
Regards
Stu.
