H-alpha and H-Beta: More mileage on the SHG Learning Curve.

Post by p_zetner »

Hello All.

I'm still exploring the intricacies of spectroheliogram image processing. Here is a comparison of H-alpha and H-beta images (taken on Aug25).

Cheers.
Peter.

Hi Peter

great comparison

Hi Walter, Mark and Alexandra.

Thanks for your comments. These images might be a little overprocessed / oversharpened to compensate for a bit of a soft focus in the original videos. I hope to improve this in the future.

I find it interesting that there is a correlation between darker patches in H-beta with the brighter patches in H-alpha. At first I thought there was some kind of problem with my image processing but other spectroheliograms show this as well (Fulvio Mete, for example, http://www.lightfrominfinity.org/VHIRSS ... images.htm). It seems peculiar because both transitions involve absorption from the same lower (n=2) energy level of the H atom (same "excitation energy" for the two absorption transitions). The difference must be related to the lower continuum flux in the blue/violet versus the red.

Cheers.
Peter.
