Andreas Murner and the Monster Solar Scope

Post by solarchat »

One of you mod guys was discussing Andreas Murner's monster solar scope mod in a post recently. I went to the site and invited Andreas here to discuss it with you but now I can't find the post.

Can we all welcome Andreas and maybe rehash the topic involving his scope modifications so he can chime in and enlighten us?

All I can gather so far is that he is using a Baader DERF, TZ2 and SolarSpectrum 0.65A Ha filter and a 0.7x compressor at an imaging focal length of 4200mm!
What a beast, and what would you mount it on?

Hey Folks,

thank you very much! Seems to be a nice place for open minds here B)

First of all, I must confess, that the monster becomes even more monstrous, since the lens get's it's final blessing by a retired, very experienced optics expert over the winter months.

To my same I have to admit, that the first light images on my website (http://www.strehlbuster.com/sonne/highl ... 110407.htm) are the only images so far - and they are taken with absolutely no care about collimation of the objective nor the focuser.

The mount under the monster is an old Type II by Meade of the old Starfinder 16" Newtonians. Not the perfection in stability, but as long as nothing breaks appart, I am fine with it ;)

The optical description by Peter (poita) is roughly complete. The only "bad and evil thing" is the sub aperture Baader DERF, mounted infront of the focuser.

I will enter more Info's here during the following days.

Cheers
Andy

Ciao Andy,

I'm really happy that you joined this community as we are all crazy for the Sun like you. Because you must be mad but to start a project like that :D

But mad people are those that have more chance to make big things and your definitely making something huge here.

I wish you all the best with the project and keep us updated. The first light pictures are already great and I'm sure that the new ones will be more and more beautiful.

Thanks!
