taking apart a PST

Post by Skyglory »

Hi I am new to this site. I already own a solarmax 40 and a solarmax 60 both with BF10. Now I want to go for more resolution. So I bought a celestron 102 HD, Baader 110 mm D-ERF and recently a PST.

There is lot of information here but I have not found a discussion on how to take apart a PST to do a MOD stage 1 or stage 2. Can anybody explain to me how safely take the PST apart. Are there any movies on youtube on this issue.

Thanks..

Bas

Hi Bas

welcome to that wonderful site. Have sun, fun and mod.

Use towels, many of them, to protect the surface of the new scope. You may have to use hot air to unscrew the parts.

Yes you can use the method solarhound posted or use a strap wrench. make sure and get the heavy duty one:-

http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/handtools/pl ... h-11247648

A note of caution. When you come to unscrewing the etalon from the gold tube and / or the black box you need to carefully remove the knurled rubber ring from the circumference of the etalon. this will reveal a single screw. Remove the screw and mark the hole on the body of the etalon that it came out of with some liquid paper / tipex. Then you can use the strap wrench. If you do not do this first the screw will shear off. It can take a considerable amount of force to unscrew the various elements. It can also be best to gently clamp the black box gently in a vice with some cloth wrapped around it to prevent damage.

If you contact Merlin66 he has a very comprehensive pdf file that explains all elements of modding the PST

I guess this would be the time for me to come in and say to the new user Skyglory that we welcome mod discussion here and have no problem with it, but NOTHING in this forum is warranteed to work and that I , (the forum creator and admin-i.e.-the guy responsible for the forum) strongly recommend that you do not attempt to take your scope apart. Once you make the slightest mistake, you will end up with a $600 paperweight
