Lunt DS-II internal double stack unit as... ???

Post by Pablito »

First of all - HI EVERYONE!

Good to see you here :) Finally found a place with solar mods and admins don't cut users' hands :)

Have some questions. I acquired Coronado SM90 front filter and I am thinking about buying double stackacking DS-II unit used with LS80 scopes.
According to Ken, I suppose it should work fine (I will use 90/600mm refractor) so no questions about it.

But.. will DSII will work as single stacked etalon with any refractor scope? What would I need? ERF only? It would be too beatiful to be true ;)

Any ideas?

Hi Pablito,
Sounds like you have an interesting mod in front of you. I had a DSII and don't think it can be used other than as designed , to go with the LS80t.The DSII has a 35mm etalon and so does a Lunt35 witch may be cheeper for your mod? :) Good luck with project

LS80THa is advertised as F/7 telescope and DSII module is put behind factory internal etalon so why DSII couldn't be used with front etalon? I will use F/6,67 scope and I hope it won't ruin my plans.

Yes, you are right, using LS35 as mod will be less expensive but will provide problems. DSII is ready to mod at once and it has pressure tuner. LS35 will need lot of work.

Telling the truth, if I had a possibility to buy second SM90, I would go into straight doublestack with Baader ERF mod. But recently no offers appeared...

I've just received an offer (from European dealer) to buy DSII unit in price I could get SM90 in US.
Now I don't know what to do - risk and take DSII (if will not work, I'll kill myself...) or wait for SM90 and have system that will work and even I could make mega-solar-bino from two etalons.
What to do...What to do...What to do...

Hi Pablito...

I am contemplating a mod using my DSII unit on a larger refractor as well, but just at the planning stage. An energy rejection filter will be needed, and I believe some form of collimating lens ahead of the DSII etalon.

I would check the Mod forum here, and Merlin has been very helpfull with my start on the project. I do not think the DSII has been widely used as a mod in systems...compared to the PST etalon version.
