CaK mod with Solar Wedge

Post by MapleRidge »

Hello everyone...

I'm throwing this out to all the optical experts, and specifically to Mark and Walter as this top ic has been around a bit and we have exchanged ideas on it before.

What I would like to do is make a hybrid CaK system using my Lunt B1800CaK (straight through model) and their 2" solar wedge as an 'ERF' similar tot eh module they sell for the LS152T.

My plan has been to remove the 2" eyepiece holder from the wedge and have an adapter made to adapt the t-thread on the CaK body and mount it on the output side of the wedge. When I unthread the 2" nosepiece form the CaK module, the ERF and ITF (Induced Transmission Filter) remain in the nosepiece.

For this to work, I need to find a filter to replace the ITF, and mount it between the wedge and CaK module. I do not have any specs on the ITF...would something like the Baader CaK filter do this job? I see is as a pre-filter, so to speak. Any information/guidance would be appreciated!

Just been thinking this over in recent months, and now wit the eye buggered up I am back on projects again.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian

that mod should work, no doubt. AS a ITF use the Baader CaK and a IR-Cut filter

Thanks guys...

What order should the IR cut go in the optical path...before or after the Baader CaK?

I would go before, reduces the thermal load on the baader caK then.

That was what I figured would be best. Would you expect thus system to give any significant change in the bandpass compared to the stock filter...narrower FWHM or shift in center bandoass?

Any other suggestions for an ITF material?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian

I agree with Mark. I tried both ways and could not see a difference with my setup.

Re: CaK mod with Solar Wedge

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi all...

I'm working back to this project now, and have a crude method set up to mount the B1800CaK to the solar wedge (enough to test it out). I used a Bessel UV photometric filter I found in the spare parts drawer on the weekend, and all came to focus and the limb glare was gone suing a full 150mm aperture ahead of the wedge...little CaK structure as I would expect the 348nm center bandpass on the UV did not match up to the CaK requirement. Still, looks promising.

Does anyone have a argument of using the Baader CaK filter verses the Andover 390nm filter? Andover says their unit has an IR cut applied, so that should simplify the optics required. If the Andover will work as well (or better) I'd go that way as it is about 1/2 the price. I won't buy the lower price to save a few bucks if the Baader is the preferred way to go.

Any thoughts and/or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian

I tested the 390-10 in several configurations with not much sucess. Combos with the baader where always better

Walter and Mark...just the confirmation I was hoping for.

The CaK filters seem to be scarce at the Canadian dealers at present, but I should be able to get one before the one dealer is sold out.

Thanks and take care,
Brian

Re: CaK mod with Solar Wedge

Good day all...

I was able to order a Baader CaK filter about 2 weeks ago and it arrived last Friday, I had only one chance to try it on the B1800CaK module last Saturday, but so far it looks good. My primary goal was to use the solar wedge as a means to use the Lunt CaK module on a full 150mm aperture and was also hoping that the removal of the ERF mirror on the stock Lunt unit would reduce the glare along the limb when imaging proms in CaK.

The pic below shows the assembled system, with the Baader CaK mounted in a t-1.25 adapter which is fitted to a second adapter ring that mates the Lunt unit to the threads on the solar wedge. This isnt an exact match, but enough to hold everything in place.
IMG_00000807.jpg
The next shows the CaK assembly mounted to the solar wedge:
IMG_00000808.jpg
The following pics show the results of the pre-mod filters...WL, Baader K-line, Lunt CaK, and last is the modded filter:
PrimeIS_10_43_46_WL.jpg
PrimeIS_10_51_55_BCaK.jpg
PrimeIS_10_57_41_CaK.jpg
PrimeIS_11_10_09_K-LCaK.jpg
Note...all the images were shot though the full 150mm aperture (solar wedge at the core), except the Lunt CaK which did not use the wedge but had the scope stopped to 115mm.

Initially I am liking this, though I am open to further refinements or suggestions.

Hi Mark and Walter...

Thanks for your comments on the set-up. I will need to run some more test shots, but I am pretty sure I changed the exposure settings on the last pic....which I believe accounts for the contrast difference.

I still need to scare up a IR cut only filter....seem to be lots of UV/IR cut available. I think I have one...just need to rummage through all my surplus bits of kit to fond it.

good luck on finding the right piece. I use as last filter a IR-cut filter from TS
