PST modification questions
PST modification questions
Hello everyone.
I'm here today to ask for your help.
I do want to do a PST mod and I have a few questions and I hope anyone here can help me with it.
Question number one:
I do have 2 telescopes and I do really want to know which one is the is the best scope for this modification.
The first one is an Explorer Scientific 102 ed
Focal Length 714mm
Focal Ratio f/7
The second one is a Astrotelescope 102 achromatic
Focal Length 1100mm
Focal Ratio f/11
Question number two:
Do you guys have any preference on the PST USA made or Meade one?
Thanks for the time to read this post and many thanks for all the answer I'll get here.

Re: PST modification questions
Astrotelescope, as its closer to F10 and as you use the etalon only there should be no difference (famous last words)
Hoping for clear skies.....lol

Hi Herberth
welcome back to the forum. I would also always go with the f/11
I have no answer to your second question

Re: PST modification questions
the latter scope, without a shadow of doubt...
Regards the PST, they're all different levels of performance, regardless of country of origin. This is what you get with what are effectively base end etalons.

Thanks guys.
I'll order my ERF today or tomorrow.. Two weeks ago I try to get it but, some family problems pop up and I didn't order it.
By the way I found this in my lunch break:

Re: PST modification questions
Finally I got a ERF Filter for my Mod.
I got it from a guy on CN and looks nice and clean. The only problem was that I touch the filter and leave a grease mark of my fingers....
I do have alcohol and some another cleaner but, I don't want to mess up the coating any idea how to cleaning?

Hi Herberth
The ERF is certainly hardcoatet, so using water with some detergent works perfect. Rinse with distilled water. Clean with gentle force, do not rub

Hi Herberth, personally I would just rub the grease mark off with my t-shirt. These filters are a lot more durable than you think...

Now a new Problem..... the Aluminum Filter Cell is too small to fit my astrotelescope.... the diameter of the inside of the filter cell is: 113 mm around 4.44 inches and the diameter of the front of my telescope is: 116 mm around 4.56 inches
any Ideas please!!!

What do you think about scrape a little more the filter cell? Do you think the filter cell will be too weak!?
Or any idea where I can order another filter cell?

Re: PST modification questions
Hi Herberth
just placing an etalon in the light train of a donor scope like yours will end up in a desaster. I highly recommend first reading the documents available in the mod section. may be you contact Kevin and ask him about of a copie of his famous paper

Re: PST modification questions
Aboy,
Modding a PST is relatively straight forward. You seem to already have the ERF and a BF15 blocking filter.
Using the objective SM40 etalon is more complex and needs additional optics.
Drop me an email and I'll send you the PST mod write-up.
(Actually lost and alone in the Scottish highlands at the moment!)
