A challenge - spectrohelioscope

Frankenscope? Let's see it!***be advised that NOTHING in this forum has been safety tested and you are reading and using these posts at your own peril. blah, blah, blah... dont mess around with your eyesight when it comes to solar astronomy. Use appropriate filtration at all times...

A challenge - spectrohelioscope

Post by Merlin66 »

How would you like to image the Sun in any chosen wavelength - with a bandwidth resolution of <0.5A
Hydrogen, Helium, Calcium, Iron - you name it, you can do!
Daniel Defourneau has been developing his scanning system since 2002 and many others have joined him.
Fred Veio has built and uses a conventional mechanical spectrohelioscope - for over forty years!
Much easier to build than a double stacked hydrogen alpha scope and the available wavelengths are endless.

Hi Ken

great. Can you show us what a typical result is from "watching" with a spectrohelioscope

Hi Ken

great documentations. I like to read them. Understanding it, is something else ;-)

http://www.astrosurf.com/spectrohelio/shg_video-en.php

The more I think about the costs and limited usefulness of a CaK filter, the more I come back to the spectrohelioscope....
I have 90% of the necessary bits, and I think I must try it out before spending even more money on scopes/ filters.
http://www.astrosurf.com/spectrohelio/doppler-en.php

The 2min aquisition time (siderial scanning)seems to be a concern, so I'll look at mounting the SHG on the NEQ6 for a faster scanning rate....Gives me something to think about while waiting around airports!!
