DIY Camera Tilt adapter

Post by pstew »

Hi fellow Solar astronomers
As a cloud day DIY project I decided to make a camera tilt adapter to try and get rid of those pesky newton rings.
It still needs a bit of fine tuning.

The clouds would not co-operate, so I can't do a before and after comparison.
But the above image was taken through the LS80 with a 2.5x powermate and no flat field. I couldn't do this before without rings, so it is looking good so far.

Wow, that looks like a stub axle for a boat trailer !
Jokes aside, how much tilt is envolved ?

Your close, melted down gearbox housing from an old car.
Very little tilt is required, fractions of a mm

Typical Kiwi ingenuity, minus the #8 wire, LOL.

Gary
There was No. 8 wire involved in the manufacture :)

Hi Colin
Its a DMK41AU02.AS camera, still haven't had the conditions to put the new device to the test :(

I don't do astrophotography so forgive me if I am naive. Can't you just remove the flat filter element in front of the chip?

Hi Colin
I don't think the DMK41 has any filters, it doesn't have a IR cut filter.
With just the camera on the scope there is no problems Its only when I use a barlow that the lines appear, I assume it is something to do with that.

Interesting, a Newton ring is usually made from 2 parrallel surfaces. That is why we tilt plane parrellel filters. I am wondering what the source of your Newton rings are?

That question aside, I am very impressed with your solution. I love your machining!

I don't understand what they are either, maybe they are pretend newton rings.
But they are now gone, and I am happy. Now for the cloud removal adapter :)

Hi Paul

please report as soon as possible when you have constructed and principle proofed the cloud removal device ;-

Well done!
It looks like a proper solution! I am also currently designing a tilt adapter, but mine will be printed.

I do have a stupid question.
In which part of the optical chain is the tilt adapter fitted? Between the powermate and camera or between the telescope and the powermate?

Hi Trent
It works the best between the camera and powermate.
