Baader Steeltrack focuser replacement for Lunt

Post by Zakalwe »

When I bought my Lunt L60 I was disappointed with the stock focuser. It was wobbly as heck, and while it can be tweaked, it is out of place on a £2000 solarscope. I think that (lovely though it is) FeatherTouch focuser is probably overkill for what only ever carry the blocking filter and DMK camera. Plus (here in the UK) the FT option is another 25% of the purchase price.

I have found that the Baader Steeltrack 2" Newtonian focuser fits perfectly. The quality of this focuser is certainly up there with the Moonlite (I have a Moonlite on my Equinox refractor) and as it has the same machined dovetail as the Lunt/GSO item it fits without the need for an adapter).

The focuser is a little shorter than the standard one, you end up losing about 15 mm. However the BF has a very long tube, so getting focus wont be an issue.

This is the one that you want:

Similar to Merlin's mod on his Crayfords, I have cobbled together a way of attaching a SW motor to the Baader Steeltrack that's on my Lunt. Teleskop Service do sell a kit, but I am not spending that sort of money on a couple of ally plates and a toothed belt. So an afternoon with some stock ally get me this:
