Still trying to come to focus?

Post by vikeljay »

I am still trying to come to focus. Since the granulations should be most apparent, which way do you turn the tuning ring to see the granulations? I have been looking for sunspots and cannot see them either. I have a white light telescope set up next to my PST and can see sunspots with it. Thanks.

Granulation? With an Ha scope? You can't see it. It's in the photosphere, a WL subject.

Try another eyepiece, low magnification 12mm or more. Get the limb sharp, then see the spots, then tune the ring to get best contrast remembering that the image is all red so needs getting used to.

No granulation though in Ha as John says :(

Have fun
Robert

How are you going to see granulation in Ha?

Besides sunspots, what should I see? I got fairly good focus using just the PST. I saw sunspots but they were not as clear as using white light. I also saw some sharp darker areas all across the disk. When I double stacked the HA, I got uneven coverage. It seems that when ever I moved the tuning rings, it got brighter in one area and darker in another area. How do you get even illumination?

The limb is the edge of the sun. Look in the main section of the forum for examples of what the sun looks like in Ha.

"Granulation" in Ha is a misnomer, it aught to be termed "texture" as the similar appearance has a different origin. Ha operates at a higher altitude than the white light view such that sunspots are not so easily seen. :)
