ok guys need some help

Post by highfnum »

jm trying to complete my SHG
trying to make it as simple as possible
Im trying to create my PSG "personal spectro graph"
I recycled 40mm PST lens for h-alpha
I figure that is simplest

my question is when do you know you got sun focused on slit
?

Hi John

an interesting mod. The lines are much to regular. Maybe you post a drowing of your setup . Here are specialist who can say you where to tweak

John,
It looks like you have focused on the Telluric (atmospheric) lines, these are on the red side of Ha so you need to re-tune the grating to bring the Ha line into the camera field of view.

The PST objective will give you a solar image about 4mm diameter on the slit gap.
Once you've found the Ha region, set up the scope so that the image of the sun can trail across the slit. You should see the spectrum starting as a small narrow strip which, as the sun's image drifts into the slit gap, gets wider and wider. It will then start to decrease in height as the sun moves off the slit.
At this stage the task is to focus the sun's image exactly onto the slit to make the top and bottom edges of spectral image as sharp as possible. Practise, practise.....
OK when you have achieved all the above, reposition the sun's image and start an exposure.
Without an RA drive it will take about 120 sec to obtain a full disk scan.
Hope this helps.

Horizontal stripes are usually artifacts from the slit edge - dust/ dirt
in this case I think it's something else - what camera/ frame rate/ exposures were you using???
The focus could be tighter.....
I just rescale the image based on the maximum height - change the width to bring the image width = height.
(The extended aspect ratio is a result of the over sampling - typically frame rate of the camera v's the scan time)

You could use a tighter slit gap 35 micron...
Yes, that looks like the solar disk.
The horizontal interference doesn't show on the raw image, so I have to assume it's caused by the processing.
Are you using Wah!s software to extract the image???

To get best data from the Ha line it should be slightly overexposed - to image the deep core and wings. The surrounding continuum will be washed out.

Dear highfnum, does the pattern show in the raw avi?
If not, can you send me the video to let me try it?

Dear Wah
I do have a version of your program
by chance I chose to first use
Dan D program first

I have a sequence of bmp files
if I can convert back to avi
ill try your program
or I will attempt
again soon as clouds clear

Thanks for your offer
which I will accept if I hit a bump again

Should be OK.
Remember the height of the slit gap is only 6mm and you need to make sure the surrounding slits are covered to prevent stray light.

ok Wah ok Merlin66

used wahs program
reduced slit size
increased exposure to 1/15

its better i can see sunspot and a prom at eight
plus
it looks better but still a way to go

still have streaks

merlin should i try to clean disk
?

could there be stria in glass?

i will try zao camera next

Wah - cool little program!

Wah i got an idea

could you write a focusing program that would integrate 1 to 2 seconds worth of lines
and display then build next 2 seconds then display and so on to help focusing

merlin66 - first time i saw proms visually like Higgins did in 1800/s -- real cool!

Well done!
A bit more practise and you'll be kicking goals.....
Stick with the narrow slit gap...
Get the exposure to give you a deep absorption line, keep checking your focus and play around with the extraction of various bandwidths (# of pixels) from the spectral image.
You may also have to throw a light proof cover over the SHG to reduce unwanted reflections etc.
Onwards and Upwards.

Sure, it can be cleaned with alcohol/water mix....
The scan lines won't be coming from the slit gap - usually dust etc. will show as continuous "transversalium" lines across the image...
Hmmm
Question: in the presented image the scan seems to be across (horizontally) - is this correct?

It's OK....
The vertical lines in your image are not caused by dust...
They come from somewhere in the processing..
