1st Jan Sun in CaK

Post by Carbon60 »

The conditions were not ideal, with quite a hazy sky and low Sun, but I wanted to try out some new kit so I was happy to take what I could, despite having to set up on the street to avoid the trees.

These are my new toys: Technosky 125mm APO for close views and a Basler acA2440-75um for FDs. Overall I'm pleased with the first light results and look forward to clearer air as the year progresses.

Oh....and I managed to snag my first jet transit.

First up, full disk: 72mm F6 refractor with the new Basler, Lunt B600/Omega CaK and 1.5x barlow.

and a closer view of the small active region through the Technosky 125mm APO with a Basler acA1920-155um/2.5x Powermate, B600 Lunt module and Omega filter.

Finally, my one and only jet transit.

Thanks for looking.

Really cool Stu, love the Jet! Always dig Cak :)

Are these AR's designated yet? The smaller AR flared this morning.

Very best,

Excellent results, Stu, very sharp and neat. The detail is great. I am glad that finally the sun showed up for you after a long time. It looks like you will have great fun with your new equipment this year...

Very good images Stu. Have you used the 125mm at full aperture ? It seems well corrected in CaK....

Fantastic!! what a great start to the year, maybe that is a good luck omen :)
I enjoyed the CaK close ups :bow I really struggled with CaK today as it was so dark, probably all the haze. I finally got some sunshine (not clear) by 12:45.

Nice results Stu! Just low cloud and drizzle down here all day, i'm hoping I get to play with my new toys tomorrow assuming the durge clears... Did you have tilt with the closeup CaK shots? Nice to see a few pores in that emerging flux region.

Hi Mark,

No tilt required in CaK for either camera at both scales, but I tried the new camera on my DS Lunt 60 THa and discovered lots of NRs. I didn't really have the opportunity to optimise the tuning and tilt because I was rapidly losing the Sun, but it looks promising that I'll be able to eliminate them with a few degrees of tilt- I hope so.

Stu.

Hi Raf,

Yes, I used it at full aperture with my fingers crossed that it worked okay. The B600 showed a little vignetting without the barlow, but this was to be expected. I want the scope for close views and it works well with the Powermate 2.5x. When the seeing and clarity improves, I'm hoping to stick on the 5x Powermate for even closer images. So far, so good.

Hi Alexandra,
I turned away and turned back just to see the contrail, so I missed seeing it live. As you say, hopefully a good omen.

Cheers

Stu

I've processed another (better) image from yesterday in BW and inverted colour. I might be seeing things, but especially on the coloured version I think I can see several small loops. I've ringed a few of them. I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on these features. They look similar to what Mark has seen in Sodium light.

I've seen these loops in CaK also. They're definitely easier with a double stacked system which is what you're running now. The scope seems to perform quite reasonably in CaK.
