Small scale rapid changes in the solar chromosphere. 280mm scope.

Post by Valery »

Hi all,

During all these boring solar minimum days we all looking for changes on the sun face, we awating new spots, new ARs.

But the sun ramains the same - almost featurless in small H-a telescopes. Not say about white light telescopes where the

sun's face just blank.

But let take a look at the sun's chromosphere through a bigger telescope, say, through a 280mm SCT equipped with a very

inexpensive H-a filter and full size DERF filter (for unwanted heat rejection) and fast video camera. Here, at a much larger scale,

we can see the sun with a resolution level not available before. When we observe the sun through small telescopes we can see

only large scale chnages with low time resolution. Now through a biffer scope we can see changes in small scale features.

Here are two photos taken through my trusty C11 and only two minutes apart. One can blink them to see how many changes can

be detected at such a level of detalization. Only two minutes apart!

Of course no such dramatic changes as in large sun spots groups and surrounding ARs, but stll much much more than can be

seen in small H-a telescopes even on a moderately active sun.

Thanks for looking and comments.

Thankfully spicules are always changing rapidly over 10 minutes :) this would make a great spot the difference game :hamster:

Yup, quite a bit going on. Would make for an interesting animation at this scale. Sadly such seeing is beyond me...

Great example of the details a large scope can pull out Valery. Nice work :bow

The daytime seeing is quite different from the night seeing.

Before I dived in to high res solar H-a imaging, I too was absolutely sure I will never catch such a seeing. Now I know when I can image the sun at high res with good chances for such a seeing: in days after some period after rainy weather, mostly clear, 3 - 6m/sec wind except north wind, 20 - 35 degree above horizon. And I do not use a SSM !
What is important too:

1. Excellent telescope optics and a quality DERF.
2. Precise focus.
3. Additional small DERF.
4. Metal tube of the SCT.
5. Luminous H-a filter. Better is a really narrow one.
6. Fast and low noise camera. 150fps or higher.
7. Patiece in hunting for best seeig moments. Patience, patience and patience. Never give up! SSM should help a lot.

Valery,
Very detailed images and excellent processing makes it easy to see the differences two minutes can make. A visual merge of the images show very little has remained stationary. This illustrates why video captures should be kept short at this scale.
Thanks,
Phil

At a good seeing I usually use 10sec recording cadence, at average seeing - 15-20sec and at lower seeing - up to 35sec.

Very nice images, Valery. The more you look the more you see...... lots going on.

Thanks, Stu.

This year I will try image timelapse movies of the sun at high res. May be with 14" aperture.
But at least with 12".
