Saturday Sun 11th May '19 Sunday Sun images added

Post by Carbon60 »

The day turned out better than expected, with a beautiful blue sky morning and some afternoon Sun with a short spell of threatening clouds between. The seeing during the morning session was sublime, registering as low as 0.5 arc seconds for brief periods on the SSM. The average was around 1, steadily getting a little worse as the morning progressed.

Active Regions 2740 and 2741 looked superb on screen through my 150mm/DS Lunt35/Basler acA1920-155um combo and 2.5x Powermate.

I tried to do them justice with a multi-pane mosaic:

And then a couple of individual shots:

AR2740

AR2741
Image20190511_Ha_AR2741 by Stuart Green, on Flickr

The two regions also looked great in CaK II, with really bright plage.
Captured with my Tecnosky 125mm, same camera, with a 2.7 Barlow, Lunt B600 module, Baader K-line and Omega filter.

I even tried a WL image for a change, using a Lacerta solar wedge (Brewster angle type):

A break for some chores when the clouds arrived and then back to it in the afternoon for Ha and CaK FDs.

Apologies for not getting the images in the correct orientation....

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Just a few from this morning (Sunday 12th).

AR2741 in Ha (150mm/DS Lunt 35)

AR2740- The dark core has completely disappeared.

And back to AR2741, this time in CaK on the Tecnosky 125mm.

I think that's the last I'll see of these guys.

Thanks for looking.

Great additions, Stu. Looking closely into the sunspot of the first Ha image from today (12th), what is that squiggly feature crossing it? It was gone by the time I looked. Very interesting to see.

Many thanks, everyone. The Sun certainly put on a good show over the weekend AND the weather cooperated.....

An interesting transient feature across the umbra, as you say, Phil.

Thanks, Alexandra. I agree with you. I worked hard to tease out as much data as I could from my SER files and to collect good data in the first place. I think everything came together just right, for a change.
I did try with the big gun on Saturday, but everything was absolutely rubbish. I spent over an hour on the following day checking and adjusting the collimation, but the views were still as bad.... I’ll check and adjust again..... not sure what else to do.

Stuart, I think there probably is. On Sunday I took several SER files which, when I watch them they are beautiful. I see lots of detail and if I extract single frames they a lovely. However, the stacks are just blurs. Therefore if I can get multiple single frames out which are publishable and the video is great to watch, then something is going wrong in the stacking. This has always been my first port of call, watch the video, does the video represent what you see in the final image? in this case, most certainly not. So I need to understand the stacking program more. Have you looked at your videos with the big scope? can you process a good single frame? how do they compare. I think we are missing something here with the large aperture processing. If I could have logged on to Flickr last night I could have shown you what I mean ;)
