45 Minutes in the life of a Quiescent Prom - 8th September

Post by marktownley »

Lovely clear blue skies this morning, only a couple of degrees above zero at dawn, won't be long till we have a frost I think... The sun was completely blank, nothing to see apart from the glorious proms. So, with deep blue skies and no sign of cloud imminent I decided to go for an animation with the Coronado SM90ii, 2x Cemax barlow and the GH3 IMX174 camera. The movement is subtle, but there is a lot going on when you look closely...

Lovely. How do you keep the feature so stable? I need an auto guide feature for solar.

Thanks everyone! Jack, I use a Hinode solar guider to help things during capture, and, a SSM to trigger capture based on seeing. It's a very automated system, and while it runs away I can go off an make a coffee, read the newspaper etc. I then use ImPPG to align (before sharpening) on the solar radius, then, this first batch of aligning is then batch sharpened. After that I then align again using the high contrast feature option. The batch of files has actions in photoshop applied (colour, high pass, rotation, final levels) before the final gif is produced.

I often set the scope up all day when I can watch them over the course of the day. The changes are often obviously evident. Photography is awesome. An awesome way to record it. Being only equipped for visual I write down descriptions. I can’t draw worth a crap. I have tried through the eyepiece shots though. With some success but nothing like what you guys do here.

Hi, Mark

The detail in the proms struck me immediately, especially noticeable as the images in the movie seem to change in sharpness quickly from moment to moment. Looks like a great scope.

Thanks Pedro, thanks Brian, thanks Phil. That's what I found too Phil, the movement is subtle but there's quite a bit of it.
