January 13 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 12:20pm to 1:10pm EST local time ( US ). Skies are clear with surprisingly good seeing! The temperature is 45F ( 7.2C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see 4 fragments of the arc-shaped filament that is now entering the SW quadrant. I can also see a v shaped filament near the SE limb underneath a double prom located there. I can see two fainter filaments south and west of the north pole.

Prominences look good today. I see a forest of them on the SE limb. The southernmost pair look like devil's horns curving inward. I see a number of proms northward of the " Devil prom ". One is bright and looks treelike. It's surrounded by a number of fainter proms. The NW limb shows a long bright prom. At lower power it reminds me of the flame on the long wicked candles I burn. Going to a little more magnification I can see a brighter central part with a loop of plasma being thrown up over it!

I can see a faint plage in the SE quadrant.

The mottles show good contrast today across the solar disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x, 62.5x and 100x ( WL )
Despite the good seeing I can see no detail at all except for the discwide solar granulation. I looked for faculae, including polar faculae but came up empty handed. No spots or pores either.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks for the report James. Cloud, grey and wet all day here today - it did clear at sunset and we had that golden band in the west as I left work. Hoping (as always!) for the weekend...

Sounds like you have a spot of bad seeing in the WL, or perhaps the Sun could wake itself up again for you :hamster:

I'd love to know what these 'wicked candles' are :)

Alexandra,
They are WoodWick candles. The ones I mention here are in a glass container that is oval or oblong in shape and the candle has a long, not tall wooden wick. They crackle as they burn! I love both candles and incense.
