Chris, thanks for the information on filters, I use a solar wedge and the continuum filter and will now try with an IR filter in place, Steve.

A brilliant article Chris, very enlightening!
The only thing I would do is to keep all the images the same at the end in B&W, it's difficult to compare when the very last image is the only coloured one. But it stills shows the main point though, just a comment.
I really can't wait to try out my new IR block filter.

Such small projects keep me really intersted in persuing solar imaging. And now that one is over, Im going to order a Baader IRUV blocker. I have been using several older models that are probabaly no where near as good. There is some suggestions that an orange filter may help in seeing and imaging the spaces between the penumbral filaments. Since I can barely resolve them anyway, it will take some one with a bit larger instrument to determine if that is the case.

That is what one can call very good information and I thank you very much for that.
Of special meaning was the "reentrances" on the Bader Continuum filter. What they advertise is the performance of the filter based on its spectral curve just around the limits of its passband (close to 540 nm), whereas one of the most import specification of a filter is its out of the band behavior. In your article you showed brilliantly how to take advantage of a good in-band frequency response folding the out of the band spurious response with a tandem filter, getting a close to perfect filter as the final resul. Very good for me, I have just purchased a wedge from Lunt and sure I am going to follow your advices.
I would have, however, two criticisms: one, as Alexandra pointed out, is that you should have placed only black and white images to compare the several filter's setups. Second, considering old men like myself who have difficulty to stay very long in front of a computer's screen reading, you should convert the article to pdf and provide a link for downloading. :whistle:
