Filter Tilt mount available soon from RAF camera

Post by christian viladrich »

Hi,

For information, a tilt mount will be available soon from RAF camera. Here is a picture of the prototype :

http://astrosurf.com/viladrich/astro/in ... -mount.jpg

The final version will be anodized and have other type of knobs.

There is a M42x0.75 mm thread on both sides, the holder is for 1"1/4 filter. The back focus is 20 mm.

The tilt can be secure thanks to the knob attached on the filter holder.

I have ordered three of them for Ca K imaging ;-)

Clear skies,

Christian

Hi Bengt,

Just send a send to Raf :

I hope to have mine (I've ordered three units) in a few weeks (including delivery delay).

Great, thank you so much. Take care.

By the way, what would you say. This unit mounted on a Quark with a second BandPass Filter, like an 25mm 1nm Alluxa. A dumb idea? A DoubleStack BF mod.

I don't think a double stack BF will help. I've done some simulations to test the idea some times ago, but 1 nm is way too large. It makes no difference.

There is some benefits of double-stacking starting at about 2 A filter (and of course below). So, practically it means double stacking with a Lunt 40 (which seems quite difficult to get ...).

Mine arrived today. Took just under 10 days to get to me. Not tried it yet, but from a mechanical perspective i'm impressed.

Tilting hardcoated ultra narrowband filters is the future : )

Indeed.

(but not more than about a degree or so ideally)

Single cavity ones yes, 2 and more cavity ones quite more without significant losses.

I got to test mine under the sun today:

Image2024-03-09_03-25-15 by Mark Townley, on Flickr

Couple of points, there is a significant light leak in the slot the brass thumbsrew sits in, I sealed with black electrical tape, I guess a felt washer would work also.

Even with tightening the allen bolts on the hinge the movement is quite coarse and difficult to be precise with.

My conclusion is that it is excellent to tilt filters with, however to have an accurate way of fine tuning the tilt of filters a skybender is a far better option. That being said this has a purpose and i'm pleased with my purchase.

What is this filter tilt holder/mount used for?

How is it different than other ones available such as from ZWO and Daystar?

It is used for tilting ultra narrowband CaK filters to get them on band or throw reflections.

The tilters from ZWo and Daystar are used to tilt the camera not the filter. Completely different thing.
