Re: The ubiquitous Celestron C6-R

Bob,
Do you have a set of CaK spot data for the "unmodded" C6 - for comparison before/ after???

Re: H alpha filter as ERF?

I had a discussion with Daystar Re the heating only to come on band with the Quark. I ordered a Quark and then had some concerns about temperature. At that time the Quark heater was said to work up to 27 deg C. My problem, like yours, was the ambient temperatures here in Australia can easily exceed ...

Re: Polar alignment during the day

I have the HEQ5 mount set outside on the balcony. The initial set-up was achieved using the SharpCap PA method at night and the position of the feet marked. Setting to the marks gave a 90% repeatable positioning. OK for solar imaging. The final set-up can be tweaked using the drift of the solar imag...

Re: Remote control of solar imaging - from inside your house?

I can see easy(ier) solutions for tracking and scope focus for a semi-remote solar set up. But for many of us that still leaves the ability to re-tune the Ha etalon(s). This can be achieved pretty simply with the T max tuner used on the Coronado but "remote operation" of the Lunt PT system...

Re: ImageJ to remove Newton rings

Magnus,
All the FFT type solutions I’ve seen seem to require basically an “even” NR pattern across the whole image, this is not always the case. E.g when imaging a full solar disk.
T2 tilters can help, but I’m finding “plastic bag” flats in FireCapture are working very well.

Re: Remote control of solar imaging - from inside your house?

It depends on the distance from the “warm office” to the scopes and mount. In my case it’s only 4mtr. I use a SW HEQ5 mount and the Synscan controller with a 4mtr extension. The solar scopes are WL, CaK and a DS SM60 mounted on an ED80. SW electronic focuser motor, gear belt drive to the 10:1 knob, ...

Re: Wanted: PST 5mm Blocking Filter

Robert,
The question I think was to clarify if you wanted the complete blocking assembly.
The PST eyepiece holder has two filter elements, the ITF at the bottom and the smaller sort/blocking filter at the top.

Re: ImageJ to remove Newton rings

Magnus,
Many of us have used similar techniques for the removal of NR in full surface solar Ha images.
I’m just completing trials with “plastic bag” diffusion filters for the full disk solar images.
Hope to upload soon.

Alexandra, et al,
Thanks for the kind words, really appreciated!
I do realize that my conditions are not optimal to getting great resolution and detail.
I can only hope my meagre efforts encourage others to try solar imaging.

Impressive prom 15April2021

While test the latest "flat correction filters" (improved results to come later!)
Quick look around the edge showed the brighter prom and small column from yesterday had developed....
Even under my mediocre seeing conditions (wild and windy) it looked pretty good.
Enjoy!

Re: SolarMax II 60 imaging difficulties

James, I’d suggest removing the DS and backing off the tuning of the internal etalon. Softly softly Re-tune the SM60II to get the best results. Using the pressure tuning moves the bandwidth towards the red wing, so adjust carefully. When it gives good images add the DS and tilt it to give a good his...

Martin bought the SW 102/1000 achromat refractor from me a few days ago.
My conditions were not good enough to get the best from it.
He has done very well with it.
Look forward to more images.

Great CaK images, the resolution is excellent.
I'd need to relocate to the Ranges to get such results!
Well done.

Re: Using flats with full disk solar images

David, Yeah, good flats seem to work well with surface images......it’s the full disk image which seems to be a (major!) problem. It’s still CWW (Cold, wet and windy) down here so I’m playing with PS and the disk flats to see if it is possible to get better registration. One issue with AS3! The fina...

Re: Using flats with full disk solar images

No, didn't try a combo of wedge/ tilter.... The NR are in a "fixed" position and orientation within the frame - independent of the location of the solar disk within the frame. I'm finding that the "best" position (minimal NR interference) is to position the disk well up in the ri...
