Re: 10 micron x 6mm Air gap slit plate

Doug, Unfortunately I couldn't generate enough interest to move forward on this opportunity. I have a couple of stainless steel ground slit plates which when mounted can give a variable 11mm long slit gap. Then there's the "re-conditioned" Surplus Shed adjustable slits. I still have a few ...

Re: Presentation and question about Luminance filter for Daystar CAK

I use the 2" Baader Blue CCD filter as an "ERF" filter in front of my DIY CaK filter assembly. Works well for me.

Re: Barlow Recommendation

I usually set the capture to 500 frames. This ensures that any change in seeing from the #1 frame to the #500 frame have minimal impact.
Usually 20% of the images used....but if the quality IS good then even up to 50%.

Re: Impact of tilt on a telecentric assembly

I have various spectrographs, my hi-res Littrow will resolve to better than 0.5A. With a narrow slit and bright target, down to around 0.4A.
Getting spectrographs together with solar filters and optics is the challenge.

Re: Barlow Recommendation

Jordan,
With my latest CaK setup - Vixen Custom 80M (80/910 = f11.4), x2.25 Hyperion barlow (=f25.6) and the ASI 1600 using FireCapture and SER files.
At f11.4 I used an ROI of 2736 x 2612 for a full disk, fps=11
At f25, I used full frame, 4560 x 2670, fps = 6
Similar result with the WL.

Re: Barlow Recommendation

Jordan,
The conditions I have even with “lucky imaging “ never give the resolution you see in some of the much better submissions.
When I ‘ve tried higher ratios the results have been worse than when f20 was used.

Re: Impact of tilt on a telecentric assembly

Interesting.
I found that any tilt of the CaK filter assembly, as expected, moved the CWL towards the blue.
Using a spectroscope to measure the CWL and the band pass FWHM removes any ambiguity.

Re: Barlow Recommendation

It comes down to aperture and camera pixel size (sampling, arcsec/pixel) and seeing. My rule of thumb, under good seeing the f ratio should target x4 or x5 the pixel size. Ie if you have 4 micron pixels then f16 to f20. If the scope is an f7 scope this would mean using a x2.5 barlow. I use the Baade...

Re: AR 2824 and AR2826 27th May 2021

Thanks guys!
I've been laid up with a serious infection for the past week or so and this was the first time I managed to get set up.....just to be clouded out within minutes.
Used the Genesis, Baader Cool Herschel wedge, x 2.25 Hyperion barlow, ASI 1600.

AR 2824 and AR2826 27th May 2021

Got a few minutes before the clouds moved in....
The two prominent AR's (2826 - nearest the limb, and 2824 following) show detailed structure in WL.
Enjoy.

Re: H alpha filter as ERF?

I had a discussion with Daystar Re the heating only to come on band with the Quark. I ordered a Quark and then had some concerns about temperature. At that time the Quark heater was said to work up to 27 deg C. My problem, like yours, was the ambient temperatures here in Australia can easily exceed ...

Re: Polar alignment during the day

I have the HEQ5 mount set outside on the balcony. The initial set-up was achieved using the SharpCap PA method at night and the position of the feet marked. Setting to the marks gave a 90% repeatable positioning. OK for solar imaging. The final set-up can be tweaked using the drift of the solar imag...

Re: Remote control of solar imaging - from inside your house?

I can see easy(ier) solutions for tracking and scope focus for a semi-remote solar set up. But for many of us that still leaves the ability to re-tune the Ha etalon(s). This can be achieved pretty simply with the T max tuner used on the Coronado but "remote operation" of the Lunt PT system...

Re: ImageJ to remove Newton rings

Magnus,
All the FFT type solutions I’ve seen seem to require basically an “even” NR pattern across the whole image, this is not always the case. E.g when imaging a full solar disk.
T2 tilters can help, but I’m finding “plastic bag” flats in FireCapture are working very well.

Re: Remote control of solar imaging - from inside your house?

It depends on the distance from the “warm office” to the scopes and mount. In my case it’s only 4mtr. I use a SW HEQ5 mount and the Synscan controller with a 4mtr extension. The solar scopes are WL, CaK and a DS SM60 mounted on an ED80. SW electronic focuser motor, gear belt drive to the 10:1 knob, ...

Re: Wanted: PST 5mm Blocking Filter

Robert,
The question I think was to clarify if you wanted the complete blocking assembly.
The PST eyepiece holder has two filter elements, the ITF at the bottom and the smaller sort/blocking filter at the top.

Re: ImageJ to remove Newton rings

Magnus,
Many of us have used similar techniques for the removal of NR in full surface solar Ha images.
I’m just completing trials with “plastic bag” diffusion filters for the full disk solar images.
Hope to upload soon.
