Latest Sol'ex trials - 17/July

A small spell of clear weather arrived on Wednesday so I tried some more efforts with the Sol'ex. On this occasion, I inserted a 2x barlow in my mini Askar telescope. This brougth my focal length up around the 400mm mark. Normally, the aperture is 40mm, but I stepped it down to 28mm for safety reaso...

Marty, Under what circumstances is it better to reduce aperture than to reduce focal length instead? I can't think of any, but I would welcome your thoughts. As wavelength decreases, angular resolution increases. But, the effect from seeing is stronger as wavelength decreases. So an example would b...

When processing my latest images in JSol'ex, I see there is a profile function. See below. 20240623_profile.png Just so I understand it, the 'bandwidth' of the system would be the full width at half maximum (FWHM), yea? I find, from my limited experience, that I need to use the telescope focus to bring the left and right edges to sharp focus, and the helical focuser to bring the fine lines of the spectrum to sharp focus.

Personally, if the seeing is unstable, I would leave the aperture unchanged and just reduce the focal length until the image looks stable enough for imaging. Sometimes I can image at a focal length a little beyond the 'maximum' stated in the solar spreadsheet. When imaging, if you put the edge of th...

Also, using a photographic ND filter as an ERF will inevitably degrade the image quality. A Herschel wedge is better or using a slit that can survive unfiltered light. A Baader D-ERF is also a good option and gives much greater light throughput (although might only work for H-alpha). Hmm yes, inter...

I used my Paramount ME with TheSkyX. Used the program to set a fixed slew speed (as opposed to the joystick).
Aperture and focal length certainly made all the difference.
