Re: Has anyone used this IDS camera?

Thanks for the report JP. Just browsing the Point Grey catalog and came across their BlackFly version of the 1280x960 e2v mono camera for $395 http://www.ptgreystore.com/blackfly-13-mp-mono-gige-poe-ev76c560 I wonder if the less expensive cameras have poorer coatings on the protective glass chip co...

Re: Solar Camera question

Hi Gabriel, The missed BIG QUESTIONS is: WHAT's the maximum frame rate at resolution 1920x1200px ??? WHAT's the maximum frame rate for at least half resolution ~ 850x600px (set by ROI) ??? (PGR didn't specified, at all) The advertised speed of 162 fps is at 1920x1200. However, I should point out tha...

Re: Solar Camera question

Hi Gabriel, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have seen a picture of Jupiter taken with the IMX174 Grasshopper3 - the customer who took it was quite happy but I can't evaluate that kind of image myself - too many intangibles that I don't understand :) However, it is a very exciting senso...

Re: Solar Camera question

also is the Point Grey FireFly MV with 0.3MP as better alternative or should i go strait for the 2MP CCD version of the Scorpion? I'm not an astrophotographer, so the nuances and suitability for your application, well, I'm giving you second hand information - others on this forum can probably give ...

Re: Solar Camera question

I don't want to be a wet blanket but... scorpions' good reputation with the solar astrophotography crowd is based (I believe) on the 2MP Scorpion with the Sony ICX274 CCD sensor. The FillFactory sensor is a cmos sensor and not nearly as good as cmos sensors are today. That was a long time ago and I ...

Re: New camera

I've heard it's newtons rings galore with the blackfly... (Point Grey lurker chiming in) Hi Mark, I saw this thread and was going to suggest to Steve that he consider the Blackfly as it is cheaper than the Flea3 and if he is going GigE, seemed like a good option, but then I saw your comment... and ...

Re: Grasshopper 3 test

Gabrieli - the reason why they don't make larger sensors to fix video shading like you suggest is that manufacturers like us are always complaining to them to "make the package smaller". In industrial cameras, small size is always important. The smaller it is the easier it is to fit into any existin...

Ok - first of all a caveat... I did this because I was interested in the problem that Eric and Gabrieli reported. As a member of the research team here, I have some latitude to spend my time like this. And I hope you guys find it useful/interesting. However... please don't get me in trouble by askin...

Sending an email to support@ptgrey.com and asking them if they have any recommendations may be a good idea too. Those guys get to hear about all the problems so they should be able to tell you if there is something to avoid :)

Re: Point grey help

Hi Rob, So... FlyCapture works ok with the camera, right? But when you say "Just can not start on the software needed in?" You mean that FireCapture doesn't work with the camera? Can you tell me what happens? Is it just that FireCapture doesn't "see" the camera and doesn't give you the option to use...

Re: Point grey help

Hi Rob - your friendly Point Grey lurker here... I have a few suggestions (that don't include throwing the camera in the garbage - call me an optimist!) - you should try the camera with the Point Grey FlyCapture software. Not hooked up to a telescope or anything, just run the software and see if you...

Re: Presentation and question about Point Grey Grasshopper3 cameras

Hi Michel, Don, thank you for your response, so you confirm the Grasshopper3 can both work at 26fps in 16 bits mode ? In fact i cannot make my choice between this Lumenera and the two Grasshopper3. I saw yet the performance specs and ICX674 is 14700e- in saturation depth when 687 is only 9400. Perha...

Re: Presentation and question about Point Grey Grasshopper3 cameras

Hi Michel, G3 ICX674 / ICX687 frame rates are sensor limited, not bandwidth limited (16-bits is obviously 2x the bandwidth) so they can both do full frame rate in 16-bit mode. Since they are CCD sensors, they do not speed up with ROI as impressively as CMOS. CMOS sensors typically speed up based on ...

Hi Rico, Yeah, definitely listen to what Brian, Brian, and Stephen are telling you - much better feedback than I can give because I have no direct experience in astrophotography. Re: Imaging Cameras

Hi Robert, Of course you can't trust anything I say because I'm a vendor ;) (and I also don't have first hand experience with astrophotography, although I do with Point Grey cameras). Here are a few comments - 1394B (9-pin firewire - the fast one) is 2x faster than USB2. USB3 obviously rocks, it is ...
