Full disk with huge prom lifting off

Pretty cool to see yet another huge prom lifting off. Last time was a couple of years ago.

Click here for the full size image. Its worth the look.

Smaller image just as a taster.

Super Prom and AR1856 & AR1857

Despite some ratty seeing this morning I was able to capture some data on Sol. One very large prominence presented on the approaching limb and will prove to be a very large filament in the days to come. AR1856 & 57 are also looking rather interesting in this double stacked image of the region. Attac...

Re: My Take on the Mega Filament 29th Sept

[quote]Nice detail Ted. I like that etalon setting and I reckon you have a slightly sharper scope than I do. It always looks just that little more crisp. Hi Paul, thanks. You might be right about my copy being a bit sharper, not sure. I certainly have seen really detailed images from your setup. I ...

AR 1850 is average seeing on 27th September

Seeing was ok but not great. Imaged with a 2.5x powermate and PGR9.1mp camera (ROI)

Very nice close detail. I really like the ejecting prominence. Now where is that full disk at that detail level? ;)

Re: Sol full panel 9.1mp PGR image

Ted, this seems to be the best way around the argument. Or I could simply continue to do what I do now and ignore the discussion. ;) One thing I have considered though is doing mosaics with this camera during awesome seeing. Using something like a 2.5x or even a 5 times. For a 2.5x it would mean 4 p...

Re: Sol full panel 9.1mp PGR image

Hmmm, I have been imaging the sun in Ha since 2006, and one thing I have found in that time is there is no one way of imaging for high detail. This data is resampled down from the much larger image. I can capture this in two minutes and not a series of panels which can take up to 12 minutes and then...

Funnily this is resampled down from native size to a smaller resolution. Easier to view over the net.

Re: Sol full panel 9.1mp PGR image

Thanks guys.

Ted yes seeing is always necessary.

David, the sensor size is 3376 x 2704 with pixel sizes of 3.69um. Cost is lots. I think I paid nearly 3500 AUD. It is a lot of money to achieve a certain goal and quite frankly a large gamble. I would say it has paid off to some extent.

Sol full panel 9.1mp PGR image

I know that recently there is some thought that using a smaller sensor will give you frames faster but I differ in opinion. 2 minute of video at 1100mm makes imaging sol quickly easy. This image was taken yesterday in pretty reasonable seeing. Big is better, so click on the link. Click here for image.

Re: Full disk with 9.1MP PGR Grasshopper3

Actually Colmic, I have found that I cannot go past 1.5x. This leaves just a small amount of real estate top and bottom for small proms. I have attached a resampled 100% image. As you can see there is not much room top and bottom. If I go 2x I can do a two panel mosaic. Alan,I see your point, perhap...

Re: Full disk with 9.1MP PGR Grasshopper3

Thanks guys for the comments.

Alan, yes the image is resampled. The sensor is 3376 x 2704 at 3.69um. This image is produced using a 1.5x barlow with a 80mm Lunt. Focal length is around 840mm

The image is further cropped on the sides to make the subject more centered.

Full disk with 9.1MP PGR Grasshopper3

Just upgraded again to what I hope is the last camera for a while. The last one was a PGR 2.8mp Grasshopper Express. This camera is the new PGR Grasshopper3 9.1mp USB3 camera. It can do a maximum of 9fps but it can cover the entire disk at hi res. I am using a 1.5 barlow but am considering getting a...

You did well Matt. I never seem to see the IIS because the transit is always in bush land to the south of Adelaide. Calsky alerts me but it always seems to be in the same spot.

Re: Solar mosaic 5 April 2013

Thanks guys,

John, the whole thing is a combination of scope adjustments. The processing is the same I have used for years. Camera is new but just covers more ground. Getting the etalons right is important and then capture in good seeing is important.
