Re: Using a focal reducer with a C9.25 and DSLR to image eclipses?

I may end up getting a focal reducer even for visual use, since it seems like something that a lot of C9.25 owners think highly of. Thank you for the input!

Those proms! The shots are excellent. You may find this link very helpful in weighing out all your options. https://www.wilmslowastro.com/software/formulae.htm#FR I had not seen that page before--thank you! (I'm glad I started this thread, if for no other reason that it brought a bunch of great inf...

Re: Using a focal reducer with a C9.25 and DSLR to image eclipses?

Ok this is all really excellent food for thought---thank you to everyone who contributed their knowledge, I genuinely appreciate it. :) I'll keep thinking about what to run for next year. For some reason, I find the DSLR more appealing in this setting than my higher speed dedicated astro cameras, bu...

Re: Using a focal reducer with a C9.25 and DSLR to image eclipses?

I dont understand the concept of imaging the suns full disk with a c9.25. Do you have other telescopes? Just responding here as well, because I do appreciate everyone sharing their thoughts. :) I actually really liked how much detail I was able to get with the higher magnification. I liked my image...

Re: Using a focal reducer with a C9.25 and DSLR to image eclipses?

Hi, Are you using the C9.25 Edge HD or the "classic" C9.25 ? What kind of focal reducer are you planing to use ? The usual f6.3 reducer is of rather bad optical quality. The reducer of the C9.25 EgeHD est excellent, but very expensive. What about using a telescope with about 1000 m focal ...

Re: Using a focal reducer with a C9.25 and DSLR to image eclipses?

Ultimately everything you will online find will just be a close but rough guide of about what to expect. The exact reducer used and the exact placement along in the image train is going to have an affect as well. Individual mileage is going to vary Bottom line is unless your spending big bucks on r...

Oh wow---Rod, I started typing my response as you posted yours, so I didn't see yours until I had already posted my previous message. Thank you, that is more or less the information I was hoping to have. Perfecto, thanks :)

Re: Using a focal reducer with a C9.25 and DSLR to image eclipses?

Great, thank you for the response! I'm more curious about the physical dimensions of the light cone/imaging circle itself, and how that may or may not be impacted by the physical components of the telescope/reducer/camera/etc. For example, in this post, it is mentioned that the baffle tube within a ...

Using a focal reducer with a C9.25 and DSLR to image eclipses?

Hi all, I have a question about imaging eclipses in general, and even though it's relevant to the 2024 eclipse cutting Mexico and the US, I figured this would apply to all eclipses, so I wanted to ask it in a more general subforum. I imaged the 2017 eclipse with a 5D Mark II mounted to my C9.25, and...

I sent a DM, but I'm not sure if it went through. It's sitting in my outbox in the private messages page.

Re: MAK 90mm for solar

If you were testing things, how would you go about doing it? I have a lead on a relatively cheap scope, and would be willing to risk it for the data collection. :)

Re: MAK 90mm for solar

I should have been more clear---I'm considering doing this without a full size external ERF, and am curious about the risk this poses for the telescope.

Re: MAK 90mm for solar

No, not really..... The heat on the secondary - which in the case of a Mak is a deposited aluminium disk and not "glued" to the corrector will be <<8W. Should be minimal risk. How about a quark with a 127mm Mak? I would for sure use an IR blocker at minimum back at the diagonal to shield ...

Re: How to Calculate Sun diameter inside Light Cone?

The telecentric barlow was definitely vignetting the light cone, and the quark itself is not. I moved up to a 2" 2x diagonal with a ~26mm clear aperture, and I can now easily see the entire solar disk plus prominences. The 1.25" 3x focal extender I first tried has a clear aperture of ~11mm...

Re: Double stacking PST/Quark question

I'm running a similar setup, and don't have it all ironed out yet but I can tell you what has made improvements for me. I'm running a Meade 2" 2x teleextender and running at 80mm-f/20 with one scope, and 100mm-f/18 with the other. I have the 2" eyepiece holder for the Quark (this: http://a...

Re: Problems with Quark and Baader filters

I can't help but ask...what is the temperature reached by the Quark? That's a lot of incident energy just heating up the housing etc. I would be interesting to measure the actual temp....... I can provide some info on this.....I had the exact same curiosity, so I measured the temps with an infrared...

Re: How to Calculate Sun diameter inside Light Cone?

I recently picked up a combo quark, and have been using it with a 3x Focal Extender from Explore Scientific. I used it with a 38mm two inch eyepiece to attempt to see a full disk, and I'm getting edge darkening around the entire circumference of the field of view. The majority of the disk of the Sun...

Off to a great start!

Have you had a chance to look through this setup with your eyes, as opposed to the camera? If so, how does the view compare to other h-alpha systems you've looked through?
