Solar Analemma. This outstanding image from Alexandra Hart taken over a period of 4 years charts the midday position of the sun in the sky throughout the year. The north–south component of the analemma results from the change in the Sun's declination due to the tilt of Earth's axis of rotation. The east–west component results from the nonuniform rate of change of the Sun's right ascension, governed by combined effects of Earth's axial tilt and orbital eccentricity.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and looking forward to a great solar cycle 25!

Winter Solstice Prominence Animation

Seasons greetings solar friends. A beautiful weekend here in the US midwest for the winter solstice. I managed a pretty good imaging session yesterday despite the lowest possible angles. Happy holidays to you all!

Hi Brian,
I really like the "melting" prominence in your first few h-alpha images. Also, that is a fantastic rainbow shot.

Re: Sunday sunshine 12th May

Alexandra, I love that black and white close up of 2740. That is one tangled knot. I have experienced similar mysteries with the stacking software. I for one rely on its 90% foolproof defaults but struggle when a sequence presents challenges because I haven't acquired sufficient cause and effect ins...

Yes, the neverending battle against dust motes...exacerbated by spring pollen and shedding trees. Perhaps they make an "autoblower" for such purposes  The Trigger Threshold was 1.6 and the Discard Threshold was 2.4. I try to strike a balance on these settings based on the prevailing conditions...
