Re: Hello All

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the Light Side.

I second ImPPG as magical, solar software.

Make sure your retirement home [?] faces a clear souther arc! No trees! They grow and grow!

Thanks. I'll try that. I usually zoom right in for a huge disk.

Re: New Lunt 60mm MT. Good or bad etalon?

It should just be a case of tuning it to get it even across the disk. Thanks Mark. Good to know. :bow I had automatically assumed asymmetrical tuning across the image was bad news. I really need to be in the shade of the dome in the morning. With a huge sun on the big 27" HD monitor to see pre...

Re: Is imaging the sun still within reach?

Best local seeing is not always at the same time of day for everybody. My early morning imaging was lost to local trees. Late afternoon is usually best for me. Despite having been heated all day and a longer, atmospheric path length. My rural situation [fields] and westerly trees avoid heated roofs....

Re: First light Stellarvue 127 + LS50 etalon mod

Lou, Thanks for sharing your mods. :bow You raise an interesting point about the attachment of the larger and heavier Lunt 60mm PT etalon. I thought I was being clever in ordering an inexpensive, Omegon 2" eyepiece/focuser extension x 35mm long. If I skim 0.5mm off the bore of the extension, in...

Re: New Lunt 60mm MT. Good or bad etalon?

Neither addition looks tuned evenly to me Chris. Thanks Mark. Is this something I can adjust? Or is it a feature of this particular etalon? This supposedly brand new instrument has a serious cosmetic issue. So timely return to the dealer may be the wisest choice. Even if it means more time waiting ...

Re: Is imaging the sun still within reach?

It was not my intention to demotivate anyone. More about questioning the escalating price of the equipment so essential to our hobby. Ironic that the term "lazy" should come from an equipment dealer. One who piggybacks, free of charge, on this dedicated solar forum. Are you pushing product...

Two more images: I was struggling to avoid ImPPG over-sharpening AS!3 output on steroids. 14.08.2022 13.09 Lunt 60mm B1200S.jpg 14.08.2022 18.00 Lunt 60mm B1200S.jpg Today's hot sunshine 83F has turned to cloudbursts and possible thunder. Looks ok to me, the right hand side of the disk is offband though. Did yoiu take any other images with it you can share? Thanks Mark. All my videos and pictures are on the observatory laptop. I have been out all morning. I'll get back to you when I find more images. I was dodging cloud most of the ...

Re: Is imaging the sun still within reach?

A very interesting question. But isn't this what is the "magic" about this hobby? Isn't this, what keeps us trying to push the limits? There is always something new to discover and to learn from others. This motivates me. If we had all the perfect setup, environment and knowledge, it woul...

New Lunt 60mm MT. Good or bad etalon?

Hi, After waiting over four months for a Lunt 60MT it has finally arrived. Visually, with a T-S binoviewer, the sun is superbly crisp. Mesmerising! A 1.6x GPC and a pair of Meade 4000 20mm brings the magic used straight through on the low, sinking sun. The T-S 1.25" star diagonal needs a 2x WO ...

Re: Is imaging the sun still within reach?

" Tinkerer " wasn't meant as a derogatory term but in Mark's case as a compliment. He learns and improves his equipment in that way! And back in the days before the internet it was books. Checked out in the local library and before then checked out at school. James I knew what you meant J...

Re: Is imaging the sun still within reach?

Mark, your user name should have been “ Tinkerer “. ;-) As long as it is not used as a derogatory term. ;) Telescope making provides hands on, practical experience in countless ways. Many of these skills and dealing with recycled or different materials can be used in "real life." Metal wo...

Re: Is imaging the sun still within reach?

Thank you all for your thoughtful responses. :bow I think it is fair to say that skill in capture and processing play a large part in successful imaging. Larger instruments are inevitably at the mercy of the local seeing conditions. Given that H-alpha is narrow band, then some allowance can be made ...

Is imaging the sun still within reach?

Detail, that most of us can only dream of! But are we in an "arms race" with millionaires? It seems that solar imagers must now go Double Stacked or go home. Use much larger apertures. Use larger, premium optics. Afford unobtainable D-ERFs. Use "collectable" vintage etalons. Or i...

Re: Help! Lunt 80 arrived and I caught AP bug

I am glad you saw my criticism as constructive. The artefacts are an overall spottiness. Caused by over-sharpening the image in an attempt to bring out more detail. An unnatural, uniform texture applied to every part of the image. It remind me of old-fashioned newsprint. Newspaper images were built ...

Re: Help! Lunt 80 arrived and I caught AP bug

Your last image is pretty but very over-sharpened. Typical of Registax. Try using ImPPG instead. Aim for a far more natural appearance without all those uniform artefacts. This advice was given to me here and I value it as causing a major improvement in my own imaging. It hurts to be criticised when...
