Re: Experience with SM2 and SM3 scopes

Thanks James for the link. I’m sure eventually Meade will come to their senses and sell the etalons separately. I also heard that the double stack SM 2 etalon will fit the 3.

Experience with SM2 and SM3 scopes

Hi all I'm contemplating buying a 90 mm Solarmax scope at NEAF this April. I'm leaning towards the SM3 with its external etalons. The thing is right now I can only afford the single stack model. Right now the few double stacked SM2's are on sale and you can pick one up for approximately the same pri...

Re: Coronado/Lunt hybrid?

Yes, will work in theory. But only as effective as stacking Lunt Lunt or Coronado Coronado. Regardless of permutation, the etalon with that needs the most tilt needs to be the outer etalon in the system. I'm a little confused, most of my solar has been with a Quark. I just recently purchased a Pres...

Coronado/Lunt hybrid?

Hi All I’m thinking of double stacking my LS60 pt, but don’t want to shell out $1500 for the Lunt 60mm DS filter. Has anyone tried to use the solarmax 2 DS filter instead? Seems like a cheaper option even with a precise parts adapter. Please let me know if this will work or am I better off sticking ...

Nice images Phil! I definitely see a difference in contrast with the DS images, especially the filaments and plage.

Re: Lunt LS50 /600 vs LS60/600

If you are seriously thinking of imaging I would recommend the 60 with at least a 1200 blocking filter. It will be cheaper in the long run to get the most scope you can afford. You also might look into a motorized stable mount. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Resolution vs. Details

What's the point of more contrast if you can barely make out the details you are trying to see? Just my 2 cents. I started off with a Quark and a 102 mm refractor that I had in my stable. It shows lots of details when there are details to see. And if you get one used probably in your budget (if you ...

Re: Visual Solar Observing

I also enjoy visual observing. It helps with stress relief! Today was a very short session. In NYC it was mid 60's and partly sunny. A few high wispy clouds made for a challenge. There was one large prom and some plague areas that were kind of hard to see through the cloud layers. I tried "double st...

Is this possible?

Hi all, I'm just playing with ideas right now and would love any kind of feedback, ideas, comments and advise on the following "mod". I have a Lunt LS60 Pressure tuned scope with 1200 blocking filter and would like to mate it with a Celestron CR-6. The Lunt is F/8.3 and the CR-6 is F/8. Would this b...

Re: Lunt 60 Pressure tuning question(s)

Thanks Mark. Brought the blocking filter inside and let it warm up with the dew heater on. About 2 hours later even with lousy seeing the contrast was much better. Was just able to make out the AR and a small filament. I wouldn't normally be out on a day like this, but with the scope just coming bac...

Re: Sol from the 4th of January 2020.

Wow Eric! Very nice set of images.

Can I ask how do you get such detailed images of Ca K proms? I'm using a Lunt Ca K filter and the only way to see the proms is to crank up the gain. Unfortunately it introduces way too much noise that makes the image less detailed. Thanks for any advice.

Re: Lunt 60 Pressure tuning question(s)

Here's the latest update on my LS60: I received my scope last week and have it out now. The weather is not optimal 42*F and very windy with many clouds and only a few breaks of sun. I did wrap a dew strap around the blocking filter and a dish towel around that to try to keep it warm. The limited tim...
