Solar Activity in Hα - 25th June 2024

The laptop died on me after just starting todays session. First the second SSD disappeared from the file explorer then when I attempted to switch it on I had 5 continuous beeps and a blank screen. According to Lenovo that's a motherboard problem and almost certainly signs of a dead duck. I reset the...

Re: AR13712 in Ha

I have used this approach many times in my deep sky imaging when working with globular clusters and bright nebula but never considered this for Solar due to the active nature of the chromosphere, but these are wonderful. How many frames were captured/used in your images?

Solargraphy - Recording the path of the Sun

I first came across the term Solargraphy on the Stargazers Lounge forum. It refers to the use of a pinhole camera to record the path of the Sun throughout the year. See http://www.solargraphy.com/index.php for more information. I used a basic pinhole camera to record, every clear day, the track of t...

When I do solar timelapses I would use Autostakkert4! to stack, ImPPG for alignment and if the seeing is steady enough I would run a Linear Fit Batch Process on all the frames to address any variance in brightness. Sol in H⍺ - 10th July 2022

A selection of observations made on the 10th July. Colour for those that like it, natural for those who like their spots black and inverted just for me because it saves electricity not to power coloured pixels. Mental note to me. Must try a hammock set up.

Solar Disc Only active regions were visible on the solar disc this morning, AR13030, AR13031, AR13032 and AR13033. Most of the prominences were on the western limb along with a long filament in the south western hemisphere of the disc. Full_Disc_20220613_061413UTC_JWH.png AR13030 (N20E21) Having los...

Re: Sol in H⍺ - 12th June 2022

Nice results John! How much of a level stretch are you doing with these images? I aim for 70% full histogram and in a couple of these images I isolated the edge of the limb and hit it with a heavy stretch. Personally, I don’t like it. Most of my adjustments are with unsharp mask and a slight s-curv...

Sol in H⍺ - 12th June 2022

Solar Disc 24 hours later we can still see a scattering of filaments on the northern hemisphere but the filaprom visible yesterday on the south east limb has dissipated. On the western limb there are more prominences evident and a new filaprom close to the southern pole. AR13030 continues its journe...

To invert or not invert an image when processing? Some like the dramatic effect that the inverted images produces, others like the more natural look of dark sunspots rather than bright sunspots. As for me, I do enjoy the inverted look more and would encourage it especially if only to bring out detai...

Re: Sol in Ha - 9th June 2022

Earlier today I posted a selection of images, mainly of AR13029, that I captured on 9th June 2022. Starting at 08:33 and ending at 08:44, this region emitted a B6.3 solar flare. Only a tiddler but I did manage to capture the event which I have made into an 8 second animation. The first frame was rec...

Sol in Ha - 9th June 2022

You would have been forgiven if you decided not to set up and observe the Sun this day. Activity has been low for the last 24 hours and only one region of activity was visible, initially not numbered but later in the day it was designated AR13029. There were also some small filaments on view, mainly...
