Re: YouTube Presentation on collecting solar data and processing

Thanks for the link John, great resource! I’ve just invested in Affinity Photo so the processing part about an hour in was particularly helpful. Have you tried stacking on it? Nic Hi Nic. I came into solar photography having spent most of my time deep sky imaging. Affinity Photo wasn’t geared up li...

YouTube Presentation on collecting solar data and processing

In early June 2022 I was asked by my local astronomy club if I would like to give a presentation on my process for acquiring solar data. Having never done anything like this before I decided to take up the challenge and put something together that not only included the acquisition of data but also w...

Re: Flats questions

I have a 60mm scope and place a crumpled translucent sandwich bag over the front secured by an elastic band. I’ve never had to defocus. I then adjust the exposure keeping the gain the same until the peak of the histogram is around 50%. I then capture a ser file of 25-50 frames then create the master...

Nice results John! How much of a level stretch are you doing with these images? I aim for 70% full histogram and in a couple of these images I isolated the edge of the limb and hit it with a heavy stretch. Personally, I don’t like it. Most of my adjustments are with unsharp mask and a slight s-curv...

To invert or not invert an image when processing? Some like the dramatic effect that the inverted images produces, others like the more natural look of dark sunspots rather than bright sunspots. Earlier today I posted a selection of images, mainly of AR13029, that I captured on 9th June 2022. Starting at 08:33 and ending at 08:44, this region emitted a B6.3 solar flare. Only a tiddler but I did manage to capture the event which I have made into an 8 second animation. The first frame was rec...
